Several PowerPoint features explain the behavior described:
- Design Suggestions/Designer availability
- On desktop PowerPoint, modern AI-based design suggestions (Designer/Design Suggestions) are only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers, not to perpetual/one‑time purchase Office licenses.
- On Mac, ensure the subscription in use is a Microsoft 365 subscription and that the account is signed in with that subscription. If it is not a Microsoft 365 subscription, only the older, basic design themes will appear.
- Designer/Design Suggestions is not included with the Office 365 Germany subscription.
- Check whether Designer/Design Suggestions is enabled
If using a Microsoft 365 subscription and still not seeing modern design options:
- Confirm that Office “connected experiences” are turned on:
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
- Under Optional connected experiences, select Turn on optional connected experiences.
- If the Design Suggestions/Designer button is missing, an administrator may have turned it off for the account. In that case, it must be re‑enabled by the organization’s IT admin.
- If PowerPoint was just installed or upgraded to a Microsoft 365 subscription, restarting the app can be required before the Design Suggestions button appears.
- Why no suggestions appear on specific slides
Even with a valid subscription and Designer enabled, no suggestions will appear if:
- There is no internet connection (Designer goes online to get design ideas).
- A non‑built‑in/custom theme is used instead of a theme that ships with PowerPoint.
- The slide layout is not Title or Title + Content.
- The slide contains extra shapes or text boxes drawn on it (Designer does not work when arbitrary shapes/text boxes are present; text must be in placeholders).
- For picture slides: more than four images are used, or images are smaller than 200×200 pixels.
- For process‑style slides: extra photos/objects/shapes are on the same slide as the process text.
- More than one person is actively editing the same slide in a shared presentation.
- Pasting content as plain text
Designer works best when content is in standard placeholders on a Title or Title + Content layout. If pasted content arrives as plain text outside placeholders (for example, into manually drawn text boxes), Designer will not generate ideas. Use the built‑in layouts and paste into the main content placeholder rather than custom shapes or boxes.
If the subscription is confirmed as Microsoft 365 Personal, connected experiences are enabled, a built‑in theme and correct layouts are used, and slides do not contain extra shapes/text boxes, Designer/Design Suggestions should start offering modern layouts instead of only basic legacy designs.
