Getting Microsoft 365 Premium counts as an "upgrade" if you currently have Microsoft 365 Basic. The subscriptions should be added together. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/office/switch-between-microsoft-365-subscriptions-3fcc1efc-2722-427f-8efa-db94b9b0a36b . The screen shot below is from the article.

Of course, if you cancelled the 365 Basic subscription first, the situation is different.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

If you haven't tried anything yet:

    • Make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is linked to.
    • Then, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your subscription status.

    If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how (Windows):

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

If you're using Mac, to uninstall all Office app: https://support.microsoft.com/office/uninstall-office-for-mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services again.
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
    • Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

To move from Microsoft 365 Basic to Microsoft 365 Premium, purchase Premium with the same Microsoft account; the switch is automatic.

    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Premium purchase page and buy the Premium subscription, making sure to use the same Microsoft account currently used for the Basic subscription.
    2. After purchase, the remaining days on the Basic subscription are automatically converted and added to the new Premium subscription. The exact number of days added depends on the plans involved; when upgrading from Basic to Premium, only a percentage of the remaining Basic time is carried over (10% according to the conversion table).
    3. Start using the Premium features immediately after purchase; no separate “switch” action is required.

If the subscription was purchased through a third-party billing partner (for example, Apple App Store, Google Play, or a retail partner), subscription management (including switching plans) must be done through that partner. In that case, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services, select Manage for the Microsoft 365 subscription, and follow the instructions or contact the partner’s support if switching is not offered.
