A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To regain access when Microsoft Authenticator is blocking sign-in and there are no obvious alternatives, work through these checks and recovery options:
- Check why “authentication did not complete”
- Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked and open on the phone. If the app is locked, the prompt or code box may not appear.
- Confirm notifications are enabled for Authenticator on the device:
- In device Settings, ensure notifications are allowed and not set to silent/Do Not Disturb.
- In Authenticator, go to Settings → Notification Settings and ensure Show notifications is on.
- Ensure the app is up to date. Install the latest version.
- Check network connectivity. If on Wi‑Fi, switch to mobile data, or vice versa. Turn off VPN if one is enabled.
- Verify the phone’s Date & time are correct and set to automatic, then restart the device.
- If Authenticator still will not complete login
- If the sign-in screen or app shows “Authentication did not complete”, it is usually one of the issues above (locked app, notifications off, outdated app, network, or device time). Re-check each item carefully.
- If the app says “Enable push notifications to receive alerts”, go to device Settings and:
- Turn on push notifications for Authenticator.
- Confirm the device has internet access.
- If still failing, remove the account from Authenticator and try adding it again.
- If completely locked out of the account protected by Authenticator
- For personal Microsoft accounts (Outlook/Hotmail/etc.), use the account recovery options on the Microsoft sign-in page (for example, “I don’t have my Authenticator app” or “I forgot my password”) and follow the prompts to verify identity and reset sign-in methods.
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT admin and ask them to reset multifactor authentication (MFA) for the account in Microsoft Entra so Authenticator can be set up again.
- If still unable to sign in
- If there is no alternative method configured and no admin who can reset MFA, the only supported path is to contact Microsoft support (for Microsoft accounts) or the organization’s support/partner so they can escalate to the Microsoft Data Protection team to verify identity and reset MFA.
For Discord specifically, once access to the Microsoft account and Authenticator is working again, update Discord’s 2FA settings to ensure there is a backup method (such as backup codes) so a similar lockout does not happen again.
