I need to turn on location, but it appears to be locked. I am using Windows 10. Is there a way to unlock it? (without upgrading to Win11)

    Hi Ken Compton,

Thanks for posting your question. I understand how frustrating it can be when Location settings appear locked, especially when you want to avoid upgrading to Windows 11. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following.

If Location is still greyed out and no error appears, try the steps below in order:

1, Check if Location is disabled by Local Policy (Home workaround)

    • Press “Windows key + R”, type “regedit”, and press Enter
    • Navigate to: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\LocationAndSensors”
    • If you see “DisableLocation”, make sure it is set to 0 or delete the entry

Warning: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause system issues. Do not modify other entries.

2, Verify the required Windows service is running

    • Press “Windows key + R” > type “services.msc”
    • Locate “Geolocation Service”
    • Ensure Startup type is “Manual” or “Automatic”, and the service can start

    3, Restart the device

    Hi,

On the page in Settings where you can turn on Location, do you see an error like “Some settings are managed by your administrator”?

Is this a personal computer, or is it a work or school device?

On Windows 10, location can be turned back on from Settings as long as it hasn’t been hard-disabled by policy or third‑party tools.

    1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Location.
    2. At the top, check Location for this device:
      • If available, select Change, then switch Location for this device to On.
    3. Under Allow apps to access your location, switch it to On to enable location for the current user.
    4. Scroll down and turn On any individual apps under Choose which apps can access your precise location that should use location.

If the location controls are greyed out or locked:

    • Sign in with an administrator account and repeat the steps above, because only admins can change Location for this device.
    • If location was disabled by changing the Geolocation Service startup type to Disabled, re‑enabling it may fail with “The system cannot find the file specified.” In that case:
      1. From Start, search for regedit.
      2. Right‑click regedit > Run as administrator.
      3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lfsvc\TriggerInfo.
      4. Right‑click the key named 3 under TriggerInfo and select Delete.
      5. Close Registry Editor and then try to start the Geolocation Service again and use the Location settings page.

To disable location in the future, use Settings > Privacy > Location instead of disabling the Geolocation service, so it can be turned back on cleanly.
