A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Follow these steps in order, testing sign-in after each major step.
- Confirm the Microsoft account works
- In a regular browser tab, go to any Microsoft sign-in page (for example Outlook or Office) and sign in with the same account used for OneNote Web Clipper.
- If sign-in fails anywhere (not just in the clipper), follow the Microsoft account recovery paths:
- If the password is forgotten, use Reset your password.
- If the password is known but no longer works, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- If the email/username is forgotten, use Look up your Microsoft account.
- If verification codes are not received, follow the verification code troubleshooting steps.
- Check for account lock or deletion
- If messages such as “account doesn’t exist” or “we couldn’t find an account with that username” appear, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- If the account has not been used for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
- Reinstall and reconfigure OneNote Web Clipper in Chrome
- Remove the existing OneNote Web Clipper extension from Chrome.
- Reinstall it from the official store:
- For Chrome: use the provided Chrome extension link.
- After installation:
- Open any website.
- Select the OneNote Web Clipper icon in Chrome.
- In the purple popup, sign in with the Microsoft account.
- If prompted, accept the requested application permissions.
- If permissions were previously denied or changed, review them in Account settings and re‑grant access to OneNote Web Clipper.
- If the problem is only in Edge (for comparison)
- If sign-in fails in Edge as well, follow the Edge sign-in troubleshooting steps:
- Sign out of the Edge profile, then sign back in.
- If needed, remove the problematic Edge profile at
edge://settings/profilesand recreate it. - Clear outdated credentials via Control Panel → Credential Manager by removing entries related to
MicrosoftAccountorlogin.microsoftonline.com, then restart Edge and try again. - Ensure Edge is updated at
edge://settings/help.
- If sign-in still fails everywhere
- Use the Microsoft Account troubleshooter in Windows (if available): Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Microsoft Account.
- If the account is a work/school account and device registration is involved, disconnect and reconnect the work/school account under Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
If sign-in to the Microsoft account works in normal browser tabs but fails only in the OneNote Web Clipper after reinstall and permission review, collect any error messages and contact Microsoft Support with those details.
