How do I log in to the Authenticator?

I'm in the authenticator app and the instructions say to tap the number on my screen. But I can't get to the authenticator because I'm trying to set up the authenticator app. If I try to log in another way it let's me, but for my school account it gives me a number to approve but this number does not appear on the authenticator because I'm not finished setting it up.
