A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For the school account, the number prompt appears only after the account is fully added to Microsoft Authenticator. Use this sequence to complete setup and then approve the sign-in:
- On the phone, open Microsoft Authenticator.
- In Authenticator, add the school account:
- Tap + (or Add account).
- Choose Work or school account.
- Select Sign in (or follow the QR-code instructions if the school gave one).
- On the computer, start sign-in to the school account as usual.
- At the sign-in prompt on the computer:
- Enter the school email, click Next.
- Choose Send notification.
- If that option is not visible, select Other ways to sign in → Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app.
- The computer will now show a number and say Check your Authenticator app.
- On the phone:
- Make sure Authenticator is unlocked (if it is locked, the prompt may not appear).
- Tap the New sign-in request notification, or open Authenticator and tap the pending request.
- Enter or tap the same number shown on the computer, then tap Approve.
- Return to the computer and complete any remaining prompts (for example, adding a phone number if requested).
If the message says “Authentication did not complete,” check these points and try again:
- Ensure Authenticator is unlocked on the phone.
- Confirm notifications are enabled for Authenticator and not set to silent.
- Verify the phone has internet access and, if needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.
- Confirm the device date and time are correct.
If sign-in still fails and the account is a school/work account, contact the school’s IT admin to reset the authentication methods.
