My backed up files on OneDrive cloud have been removed. I am the administrator and I DID NOT Remove them. What is going on? Should I move to iCloud which is supposed to be more reliable? Please email me the answer to my question as it is very concerning. ******@gmail.com

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Are the files missing only on your PC, or also when you sign in at onedrive.live.com?
    2. Did you recently sign in with a different Microsoft account?
    3. Have you checked the OneDrive Recycle Bin (both stages)? Do you see any folders like “Archived”, “Personal Vault”, or different folders where they might have been moved?
    4. Did this happen after an update, reset, or reinstall of Windows?

Also, OneDrive does not usually delete files on its own. Common causes are sync issues, account mix-up, or files being moved.

    Please try this:

    • Go to OneDrive web https://onedrive.live.com
    • Click Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive
    • Check if you can restore to a date before the issue happened

About switching to iCloud, I’d hold off for now. This looks more like a recoverable situation rather than reliability.

Also, for your security, avoid posting your email publicly. Replies will be posted here so others can help too.

Let me know what you find from the questions above.

OneDrive does not delete files arbitrarily. If files from 2024 and earlier appear missing, use these checks and recovery options:

    1. Check OneDrive online
    • Sign in to https://onedrive.live.com with the same Microsoft account used for backup.
    • Browse all folders and use the search box to look for known filenames or file types.
    1. Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin
    • In OneDrive on the web, open the Recycle bin.
    • If items are present, select them and choose Restore.
    • Files removed from OneDrive are held in the OneDrive Recycle Bin for up to 30 days. After that, they are normally not recoverable.
    1. Use OneDrive “Restore your OneDrive” (if eligible) If a large number of files were changed or removed (for example by accidental deletion, sync issues, or malware) and a Microsoft 365 subscription is in place:
    2. Open the Restore your OneDrive options: https://onedrive.live.com/?v=restore.
    3. Choose a date within the last 30 days when the files were still present.
    4. Restore to that point in time. This undoes actions on files and folders within the last 30 days.
      • Caution: Files or folders created after the chosen restore date will be moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin and can be restored from there if needed.
    5. Check local device storage If files were never fully synced or were moved out of OneDrive:
    • Use File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) to search the local computer for filenames.
    • Also check the computer’s Recycle Bin or Trash.
    1. macOS-specific behavior (if using a Mac) On macOS 12.1 and later, the OneDrive folder path moved to Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive. Files may appear missing if looking in the old location. Use Finder to browse to the new path or the OneDrive alias that was created.
    2. When files cannot be found For personal OneDrive accounts, support agents cannot access or restore files beyond what the Recycle Bin and Restore your OneDrive provide. If files are not in OneDrive, its Recycle Bin, or on any local device, there is no additional native Microsoft method to recover them.

Regarding moving to iCloud: the provided information only covers Microsoft storage behavior and recovery. Reliability comparisons with other services are outside this scope.
