Hello,

I activated an Azure for Students subscription yesterday. Initially, the portal showed $100 credit. Overnight, it changed to $85 total credit (showing $85 out of $85), even though I have not created any resources and cost analysis shows $0 usage.

Could you please clarify why the total available credit was reduced?

Thank you.

Diana

We understand that your Azure for Students subscription initially showed $100 credit, but later changed to $85, even though no resources have been used.

Please note that this behavior can occur due to backend validation or billing adjustments after the subscription is activated. Sometimes, the initial amount displayed is provisional, and the system later reflects the finalized credit balance.

Since your Cost Analysis shows $0 usage, this confirms that no charges have been incurred on your subscription.

    Recommended steps:

    1. Allow some time for synchronization We recommend waiting 24–48 hours, as this may be a temporary display or synchronization issue.
    2. Verify in the Credits section
      • Navigate to:
      • Azure Portal → Cost Management + Billing → Credits
      • Check the total granted credit displayed there.
    3. Contact Azure Support if issue persists
    • If the balance continues to show $85 after 48 hours, please raise a support request under Billing for further investigation.
    • The support team can verify and correct the credit allocation from the backend if needed.

Please let me know if you face any challenge here, I can help you to resolve this issue further

Azure for Students always includes $100 in credit for 12 months, but the visible remaining balance can change from the initial display as the sponsorship system finishes provisioning and synchronizing the actual grant amount.

The effective, authoritative balance for Azure for Students is shown in the Azure Sponsorships portal, not just the initial banner in the Azure portal. The sponsorship system tracks:

    • The total granted credit
    • The remaining credit
    • The expiration date of that credit

To verify the correct balance and see exactly how much credit is available:

    1. Go to the Microsoft Azure Sponsorships portal: https://www.microsoftazuresponsorships.com/balance.
    2. Sign in with the same account used for Azure for Students.
    3. Check the used and remaining credit and the credit expiration date.
    4. If the Sponsorships portal also shows $85 as the total granted credit (rather than $100), and there is still no usage in Cost Management, this indicates that the sponsorship itself was issued for $85.

If the Sponsorships portal shows an unexpected total credit amount (for example, $85 instead of $100) and there is no corresponding usage, contact Azure support so a billing engineer can review the specific subscription and sponsorship details and correct any provisioning issue if applicable. Billing support is free.
