Legal name details on Microsoft accounts cannot be edited directly through general profile settings when they are tied to billing, certification, or exam records. The supported path is to contact the appropriate Microsoft support channel and request a correction.
For Microsoft account display information (name shown when signing in, on Windows devices, and in Outlook.com):
- Sign in to the Microsoft account name management page using the Sign in link under Change your Microsoft account display name.
- On the Edit name screen, remove the underscore from the middle name field (or leave it blank if allowed) and select Save.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the change to propagate across services.
If the incorrect legal name is associated with certification/assessment or other Learn-related records (for example, exam registration issues), submit a support request so an agent can review and correct the legal name in the backend systems:
- Go to the Microsoft credentials support page for help with certification and exam profile issues.
- Open a support case describing that the middle name was entered with an underscore and needs to be corrected to a blank.
- Provide any requested identification or documentation so support can validate and update the legal name.
If the legal name is tied to billing or shipping information for purchases, update the billing profile:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account billing and address management page.
- Under Billing & shipping addresses, edit the relevant address or profile and correct the name fields, then select Save.
If sign-in issues or profile page reload loops prevent access to these settings, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper or contact Microsoft Support and explain that the incorrect legal name formatting is blocking normal account management.
