Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Are the files actually changing format, or just opening in Word?
    2. What file type do you see (for example: .jpg, .pdf, .docx)?
    3. When you right-click the file > Properties, what does it show as “Type of file”?
    4. Did this start after installing or updating anything?

This usually happens when the default app is set to Word for many file types.

If you haven't tried anything yet, please start by:

    • Right-click one affected file
    • Click Open with > Choose another app
    • Pick the correct app (Photos for images, PDF reader for PDFs)
    • Check Always use this app

If many file types are affected, we may need to reset default apps.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

Downloads are not actually being converted to Word; Windows is just opening them with Word by default, which makes non‑Word files look unusable.

To fix this, change the default app for each file type (for example .pdf, .jpg, .png, .docx):

    1. In File Explorer, right‑click one of the problem files (for example a photo like .jpg or a PDF).
    2. Select Open with > Choose another app.
    3. Select the correct app (for example Photos for pictures, Movies & TV or another video player for videos, Acrobat Reader or Edge for PDFs).
    4. Check Always use this app to open .xxx files.
    5. Select OK.

Repeat for each file type that is opening in Word.

If the files are actually Word documents (.docx, .doc, .rtf, etc.) and still unusable, verify that the file type is supported and being opened correctly. For example, Word can open and edit .docx, but formats like .pdf or .rtf are limited or read‑only and may not display as expected.

For PDFs specifically, use a PDF viewer for best results, because PDF is not Word’s native format and may not display correctly when opened in Word.
