For Outlook.com and Outlook on the web, Gmail access issues are usually caused by Gmail’s IMAP settings or by changes in how Google allows connections.
Try these steps in order:
- Verify IMAP is enabled in Gmail
- In a browser, go to Gmail.
- Select Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.
- Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
- Select Save Changes.
- Confirm correct server settings in Outlook.com
- In Outlook.com, open Manage Connected Accounts (if available).
- Check the Gmail connection uses:
- Incoming (IMAP) server:
imap.gmail.com, SSL, port 993
- Outgoing (SMTP) server:
smtp.gmail.com, SSL/TLS, authentication enabled, port 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS/STARTTLS)
- Username: full Gmail address
- Password: current Gmail password
- Be aware of Outlook.com limitations
- Outlook.com no longer allows connecting new third‑party accounts (including Gmail) and no longer syncs existing connected accounts from within Outlook.com.
- If the Gmail account was previously connected as a “connected account,” it may have stopped syncing due to this change.
- To keep using Outlook while viewing Gmail, use one of the options described under How to view your other accounts while still using Outlook in the referenced article or the interactive guide linked there.
If IMAP is enabled and server settings are correct but Gmail still does not sync, the issue is likely due to the Outlook.com change that removed support for connected Gmail accounts. In that case, use one of the alternative access methods suggested in the Outlook.com guidance rather than reconnecting Gmail as a connected account.
