Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To cancel the personal Microsoft 365 subscription and keep using the family subscription, follow these steps for the personal account that is being paid for:
- Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page for Microsoft 365:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the personal Microsoft 365 subscription (not the son’s family account).
- Find the personal Microsoft 365 subscription under Services & subscriptions and select Manage.
- If Turn on recurring billing is shown instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew; no further action is needed.
- On the next page, select Cancel or Cancel subscription (it may appear as Upgrade or Cancel).
- Scroll through and follow the on‑screen instructions to complete cancellation.
- After cancellation, access to the personal subscription continues until the end of the current billing period. After that, only the Microsoft 365 Family benefits from the son’s subscription remain.
Important effects of cancelling the personal subscription:
- Storage reverts to the free 5 GB of cloud storage (shared by OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments) and 15 GB of Outlook.com mailbox storage.
- If storage used is above the free allowance:
- Uploading, editing, or syncing new files to OneDrive will not be possible.
- Sending or receiving email in Outlook.com will not be possible until usage is reduced.
- After a grace period (as described in the refund/cancellation policy), OneDrive data may be deleted.
If a refund is needed and the personal subscription was purchased from Microsoft, cancel it first as above, then follow the refund eligibility guidance in the refund article.
