Subject: Important: Urgent help needed to fix Microsoft Family restrictions on my account

Hi,

Currently, my account's birth year is incorrectly set to 2023, which has triggered "Child" restrictions. This is causing major issues with my JEE 2026 exam preparation because Microsoft is blocking essential study websites, preventing me from using Private Tabs in browsers, and showing "Ask a Parent" pop-ups constantly.
I tried everthing i could but im unable to leave family group or escape restrictions.

Thank you so much for your help with this. It’s a huge relief to get this cleared up so I can focus on my studies!

Best regards, [Vedant yadav]

When you go to https://account.live.com, did this screen pop up? =User's image

You want to choose "I am a parent or guardian," then sign into a different Microsoft account whose date of birth indicates an adult user. If you don't have one you can use, you can create a new one just for this purpose for now. It will prompt you to sign in, give your account consent, and join your family group. Once you join the new account's family group, go to https://account.live.com/mykids.aspx sign in with the new account (the adult one); you should see your "child" account listed. Click on "Edit this child's personal info." And it will let you update the date of birth for this child user.

Once updated, you can then use the "Remove consent for this child's account", then go back to the family safety page, click on this child account and choose "remove from family group".

Because the account birth year is set so recently, Microsoft treats it as a child account and applies Family Safety restrictions. For child accounts, changing the birth date directly to make it an adult is intentionally blocked to prevent bypassing family protections.

To fix this, only an adult account that has given consent or manages the Family group can adjust settings or remove restrictions. The options are:

    1. Ask the adult/organizer of the Family group to adjust restrictions
      • They should sign in at family.microsoft.com.
      • Select the child account.
      • Relax or remove web filtering, app/game limits, and other restrictions so study sites and private browsing work.
    2. If the account is incorrectly marked as a child but has consent
      • The adult account that provided consent should go to https://account.live.com/mykids.aspx.
      • Select Edit this child's personal info and follow the instructions to correct the birth date, if the UI allows it for that scenario.
    3. If the account shows “Parent or guardian consent is required for this account”
      • Follow the child-account flow:
        1. Sign in at https://login.live.com.
        2. Choose I'm a parent or guardian.
        3. Sign in with an adult Microsoft account (or create a new adult account, with age ≥18 or ≥19 in Canada).
        4. Give consent by selecting Yes, I agree.
        5. Select Family Safety to finish.
        6. Go to https://account.live.com/mykids.aspx, select the child account, then Edit this child's personal info and follow the instructions.
    4. If the account is truly a child account and the system will not allow changing the date of birth
      • In that case, Microsoft does not allow converting it to an adult account just by editing the birth date. The account must reach the statutory adult age before it can leave the Family group or fully remove restrictions.
      • Until then, only the adult/organizer can relax or remove restrictions via Family Safety.

If the account holder is above statutory age but the system still treats the account as underage, use the parental consent guidance to correct the age:

    • Start with the interactive tool under Why am I required to provide consent even though I am above statutory age? and follow the steps provided there.
