Hello Azure Support Team,

I am trying to create a free Azure account, but I am encountering an issue during the payment verification step.

I am receiving the following error: “Check with your bank. Your bank couldn't authorize this payment method.”

I have already ensured the following from my side:

  • International transactions are enabled on my card
  • Online (e-commerce) payments are enabled
  • Recurring/subscription payments are enabled
  • I am not using any VPN and my region is set correctly (India)

Despite this, the payment authorization is still failing.

Could you please help me understand:

  • If there are any restrictions for debit cards (especially from India)
  • Whether there are specific card types or banks that are supported
  • Or if there is any issue from Azure’s side with my account

Here are the details for your reference:

For Azure free account sign-up, the payment step is an identity verification by card, and several card and account conditions can cause the “Check with your bank. Your bank couldn't authorize this payment method” error.

    Key points for India specifically:

    1. Card type and scheme requirements
    • Virtual or prepaid cards are not accepted for Azure subscriptions.
    • For India, supported cards are Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards only.
    • American Express is not supported as a payment instrument in India.

    If the card is:

    • Prepaid, virtual, or a card type other than Visa/Mastercard, it will be declined.
    1. Other common decline causes According to the Azure sign-up and declined-card troubleshooting guidance, a card can be declined if:
    • The card is inactive or blocked – must be confirmed with the bank.
    • The name, address, and CVV entered do not exactly match the bank’s records.
    • The billing address country/region in the “About you” section does not match the card’s billing country/region (must be set to India and match bank records).
    1. Browser and verification flow issues For the identity verification by card step:
    • Third-party cookies must be allowed; otherwise, the verification progress can hang or fail.
    • If the progress bar hangs or the step does not complete, update browser cookie settings (for example, in Edge set Cookies → “Don’t block cookies”), refresh the sign-up page, or restart the browser and try again.
    1. Whether this is an Azure-side account issue From the provided guidance, most such errors are due to:
    • Card type not supported (prepaid/virtual/unsupported scheme), or
    • Card/billing data mismatch or bank-side blocking.

If all of the following are true:

    • Using a physical Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card issued in India (not prepaid/virtual),
    • Card is active and allowed for international/online/recurring transactions,
    • Name, address, and CVV exactly match bank records,
    • Country/region and billing address in the Azure “About you” section are set correctly to India,
    • Browser allows third‑party cookies and the sign-up page has been retried in a fresh session or different browser,

and the error still persists, the next step is to contact Azure billing support so the account can be reviewed for any sign-up flags or issues that are not visible in the portal.
