    Hello @Shelby Littlefield

In this case, you cannot "switch" or convert a personal account into a business account. They exist on two different systems. To move to a business domain without paying for both, follow these steps:

    1/ Purchase a Business Plan

Buy a Microsoft 365 Business subscription (Basic, Standard, or Premium). This is a separate billing entity from your personal one.

    2/ Add Your Domain

    • Log into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Settings > Domains, and connect your custom email

Add a custom domain to Microsoft 365 - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

    3/ Move Your Data

    • Email: Add both accounts to the Outlook desktop app and drag/drop your emails from the personal folders to the business ones.
    • Files: Download your files from your personal OneDrive and upload them to the new Business OneDrive.

    4/ Cancel the Old Subscription

Once your data is moved, turn off recurring billing for your personal Microsoft 365 account to avoid double charges. You can keep the personal account as a free account for your Windows login.

If you still need my assistance, please come back with screenshots or any additional details so I can review it again and see if there’s anything more I can help you with.

    Have a nice day!

A personal Microsoft 365 subscription (Family/Personal) cannot be converted directly into a Microsoft 365 business subscription, and accounts cannot be merged. To use a business (custom-domain) email without paying for two active subscriptions long term, follow these steps:

    1. Sign up for a Microsoft 365 business subscription
      • Choose a Microsoft 365 for business plan (for example, Business Basic/Standard/Premium) and sign up with the email address that will be used as the business account.
      • During sign-up, either:
        • Use a free onmicrosoft.com domain temporarily, or
        • Use/buy a custom domain (for example, ******@contoso.com).
      • See: Sign up for Microsoft 365 Business Standard FAQ for how business email and domains work.
    2. Set up business email with your domain
      • If buying a new domain:
        1. Buy a new domain during Microsoft 365 setup.
        2. Change the first part of the address (before @) or keep it as is.
        3. Sign out and sign back in with the new business email address.
      • If using an existing domain:
        1. Sign into the site that hosts the domain and verify it for Microsoft 365 (usually by adding a DNS record).
        2. Customize the email address or leave it as is.
        3. Sign out and sign back in with the new business email address.
      • After this, all users in the business tenant can be assigned addresses on that domain.
    3. Move from personal to business use
      • Use the business subscription for all work data, email, and collaboration going forward.
      • Transfer business documents and files from the personal subscription (OneDrive, etc.) into the new business tenant manually or following the guidance in Switch from an individual Microsoft 365 subscription to Microsoft 365 for business.
    4. Avoid paying for two subscriptions long term
      • Once everything needed for business is moved and confirmed working in the business tenant, cancel the personal Microsoft 365 subscription you no longer need.
      • Cancel from the personal account’s Subscriptions page so only the business subscription remains active.

    Notes:

    • Personal and business accounts remain separate; they cannot be merged. The personal account can still exist without an active subscription.
    • A business email requires either a custom domain or an onmicrosoft.com domain as described in the business sign-up FAQ.
