Using outlook online, the calendar is broken : it shows me as always busy, even though there is nothing in the calendar.

How to fix this?

    Hi @---

I hope you are doing well today.

I am writing to address the situation where the calendar application consistently displays a busy status despite having no scheduled appointments.

This behavior typically occurs due to a synchronization delay or corrupted hidden data within the mailbox availability folder. Essentially, a background process maintains an active state even when the visual interface remains clear.

When Outlook Web displays you as "Busy" despite an empty calendar, it usually stems from a mismatch in your availability settings or a "ghost" event stuck in the backend.

Here are the most effective ways to address this through the web interface.

1/ Verify working hours and location

If your working hours are misconfigured, Outlook may mark you as unavailable outside (or even inside) those specific times.

    • Open Outlook Web and click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right.
    • Navigate to Calendar > View.
    • Scroll down to Working hours and location.
    • Ensure the days and times selected match your actual schedule. If a specific day is checked but the hours are set incorrectly, it can trigger a "Busy" status for the entire block.

    2/ Match time zone settings

A discrepancy between your browser's time zone and your Outlook settings can cause your "Busy" status to shift into empty slots.

    • In Settings, go to General > Language and time.
    • Check that the Current time zone matches your actual location.
    • Go back to Calendar > View and ensure the time zone there is synchronized.

    3/ Identify "ghost" recurring events

Sometimes a corrupted recurring meeting doesn't render visually but still occupies the slot.

    • Switch your Calendar view to List (usually found in the dropdown menu where it says "Month" or "Week").
    • Look for any events with no subject or unusual dates.
    • Delete any suspicious items that appear in the list but were invisible on the grid.

Moreover, you can access the Microsoft Teams web interface to verify if any hidden meeting invitations or recurring series are active in the background. Since the platforms share the same data source, clearing a stuck status or "ghost" meeting in the Teams calendar will often immediately update the availability shown in the web mailbox.

    4/ Clear browser interference

Browser extensions or cached data can occasionally interfere with how the Free/Busy status is reported to the server.

    • Open Outlook Web in an Incognito or Private window.
    • Check if the status remains "Busy."
    • If it looks normal in private mode, clear your browser's cache and cookies specifically for the Microsoft domains.

    5/ Check "publish calendar" settings

If you have shared your calendar or published it, there might be a synchronization lag.

    • Go to Settings > Calendar > Shared calendars.
    • Under Publish a calendar, check if any active links are outdated. Resetting these can sometimes force the backend to recalculate your availability.
