Rather than using the Storage settings in the Settings app, using Disk Cleanup to delete anything that can safely be deleted is the best option to clear as much space as possible on your C drive safely..

    1

    Open File Explorer

Click 'This PC' on the left.

Click on your C drive on the right.

Click the 3 dots on the top menu, then select Cleanup

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

    2

    Start Disk Cleanup again

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Very Important - this time in the resulting dialog, click 'Cleanup System Files'

Let Disk Cleanup run another scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

Storage cleanup recommendations in Windows 11 (such as those shown in Storage Sense or Storage settings) can’t be selectively deleted as “recommendations” only. Instead, the underlying files or data must be removed using the relevant cleanup features.

For typical storage cleanup on a Windows 11 home device:

    1. Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup to remove system files like temporary files or Windows upgrade log files.
    2. For cloud-related storage (for example, OneDrive), sign in to the service and delete the actual content contributing to the recommendation.

To free up OneDrive cloud storage specifically:

    1. Sign in to OneDrive and review what’s taking up space (large files, archives, etc.).
    2. Empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin online; note that this is separate from the Windows Recycle Bin and may take up to 24 hours to reflect in quotas.
    3. If still over quota after removing everything possible, additional storage must be purchased.

There is no supported way to delete the OneDrive storage itself without deleting the Microsoft account; OneDrive storage is part of the account.
