Excel is automatically interpreting the entry as a number (or date/scientific value) instead of text, so the text part is dropped and the number is right‑aligned and sometimes reformatted.
To keep both the number and the word together in one cell and have them save correctly, format the cell as Text before typing:
- Select the cell (or cells) where both numbers and words will be entered.
- On the ribbon, select Home > Number Format (drop‑down) > Text.
- Now type the number and word (for example,
123 ABC) and press Enter.
If the entry is already in the cell and Excel has changed it, clear the cell, set the format to Text as above, then retype the value.
If Excel still tries to interpret a number in a special way (for example, 1e9 as scientific notation or something that looks like a date), type an apostrophe first, then the value, such as:
The apostrophe forces Excel to treat the entire entry as text and will not be printed or displayed in the cell.
If a small green triangle appears in the corner of the cell indicating “number stored as text,” it can be ignored, or select the triangle and choose Ignore Error.
