Question

i recently placed my build for the insider preview in a canary build. It was originally in a Dev build. How do i return to the dev build? The options cannot be selected.

Hello Collyn,

How recent did you switch Channels. If it was within 10 days you can do a rollback. As you can see in my pic that option is now grayed out because the build was installed over 10 days ago. You might want to check this first.

Otherwise, as posted you will have to do a clean install. Ensure you backup all important files.

Because the device is now on a Canary build, switching back to the Dev Channel is not supported directly through the Windows Insider settings when the build number is higher than what is flighting in Dev.

To move back to Dev, the supported path is:

1. Check current build vs. Dev Channel build:
   • Find the current build number (for example, via winver or Settings → System → About).
   • Compare it with the current Dev Channel build listed in Flight Hub.
2. If the current Canary build number is higher than the Dev Channel build (this is the usual case):
   • A clean installation of Windows is required to move back to a lower build.
   • Follow the clean install instructions from the Insider ISO page: Do a clean installation of Windows on your device with these instructions.
   • After reinstalling Windows, go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Insider Program and re-enroll the device, selecting the Dev Channel.
3. If at some point the Canary build is equal to or lower than the Dev build (rare for Canary):
   • Open Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program.
   • Select Choose your Insider settings and change the channel to Dev.
   • The next update received will then be from the Dev Channel.

The reason the channel options are greyed out is that Windows does not allow in-place downgrade from a higher, more experimental branch (like Canary) to a lower one (Dev); a clean install is required when the build numbers do not align.
