Every time I reset my password, It's still incorrect

Hi, I need help signing in to my Microsoft/Outlook account. I recently changed my password several times because I keep getting an error saying, “You’ve signed in too many times with an incorrect password,” even though I’m entering the correct one.

Right now, the only way I can access my account is through the Microsoft Authenticator app. I cannot sign in using my password at all, even after multiple resets.

Can you help me resolve this issue so I can sign in normally with my password again?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

This type of error typically resolves itself within 24 hours. During this time, please avoid signing in repeatedly. Please note that it can take up to a maximum of 7 days to resolve the issue.

If you are still experiencing issues, you can try the account recovery form here to unblock your account. However, this form does not work if you have enabled two-step verification in your account.

Remember to use a familiar device from which you've frequently accessed your Microsoft account, as well as a familiar location. Microsoft will review your responses and respond within 24 hours. If you are verified, instructions on how to log back into your account will be sent to you, and if you are not verified, you will need to submit the Account Recovery form again. You can do this up to 2 times every 24 hours.

If you have two-step verification enabled, you can submit the account reinstatement form to the Microsoft Account Digital Safety team. They will review your responses and the reasons your account was disabled, and they will help reinstate your account.

Select "I am having problems with my password, or I can't log in or reset my password," and submit the form.

Follow these steps to restore normal password sign-in:

    1. Stop repeated sign-in attempts temporarily
Because the message says "You’ve signed in too many times with an incorrect password," the account or device may be temporarily locked by automated protection.
      • Wait at least 24 hours without trying to sign in with the password on that device or app.
      • During this time, only use the Microsoft Authenticator app where it still works, and avoid additional failed password attempts.
    2. Use the Sign-in Helper to check the account status
      Go to the Sign-in Helper.
      • Enter the email address or phone number used for the Microsoft/Outlook.com account.
      • If a problem is detected (for example, temporary block or security issue), follow the steps provided there.
This tool is the primary way to identify and fix most Microsoft account sign-in issues.
    3. Reset the password once more after the wait period
After waiting out any lockout period:
      • Go to Recover your account: https://account.live.com/password/reset.
      • Enter the email, phone number, or Skype name.
      • Choose where to receive the security code (text, email, etc.), then select Next.
      • Enter the code, then select Next.
      • Set a new password (not used before) and confirm it. Tips from the guidance:
      • Make sure the correct domain is used (for example, outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, or a country domain like .co.uk).
      • Check for typos in the email name (for example, rachel vs rachael).
    4. Test sign-in in a clean way
      After the reset succeeds:
      • First test sign-in in a browser at https://outlook.live.com or https://account.microsoft.com (not via an app).
      • If this works in the browser but not in a specific app or device, remove the account from that app/device and add it again using the new password.
    5. If the username or password is still not accepted
If, after a successful reset, the sign-in page still says the password is incorrect or the username is not recognized:
      • Follow the steps in My username and password have stopped working and use Recover your account again: Recover your account.
      • If the message "We couldn't find an account with that username" appears even after checking the domain and spelling, use the Contact support option described there to reach a support advocate and state that the username has stopped working.
    6. If the account might be blocked or compromised
If the issue persists even after 24 hours and a clean reset, or if there are signs of unusual activity:
      • Review the guidance in What happens if there's an unusual sign-in to your account and sign in to the Security basics page when possible to review recent activity and change the password again if needed.
      • If sign-in is not possible at all, use Forgot my password on the sign-in page and select I think someone else is using my Microsoft account, then follow the recovery steps.

These steps align with Microsoft’s standard process for resolving repeated “incorrect password” and lockout issues and restoring normal password-based sign-in.
