My laptop left speaker makes crackling sound, it happened all of a sudden. The right side part of the laptop speaker works fine.
I am unaware how it happened.

What can be the problem and how to fix it.

    Hi,

It's possible to test with a headphone jack or speakers with a jack input to see if the problem persists.

Access the start menu > settings > system > sound > sound control panel > select the sound driver > properties > advanced > change the default format to 16-bit 4800Hz (DVD quality). If that doesn't work, change it to 24-bit and test again, and uncheck the "Enable audio enhancements" option.

If that doesn't work, access msinfo32.exe in the search bar, take a screenshot, and post it here.

On Windows 10, first rule out software and settings issues before assuming a hardware fault in the left speaker.

    1. Check output device and basic connections
      • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      • Use the arrow to confirm the correct output device (the laptop’s internal speakers) is selected, not an external monitor or other device.
      • Make sure nothing is plugged into the headphone jack that might partially disconnect or interfere.
    2. Check volume, mute, and per‑app sound
      • Right‑click the Speakers icon and select Open Volume mixer.
      • Ensure the main device and all apps are not muted and have reasonable volume.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Select the laptop speakers as the output device, then Device properties and confirm the device is not disabled.
    3. Turn off audio enhancements and change format
      • Right‑click the Volume icon and select Sounds.
      • On the Playback tab, select the laptop speakers and choose Properties.
      • On the Enhancements tab, select Disable all enhancements, then OK, and test.
      • If crackling persists, go back to Properties > Advanced and try a different Default format, then test again.
    4. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      • Press Start, type device manager, and open it.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right‑click the laptop’s audio device (for example, Realtek) and select Update driver and follow the prompts.
      • If no change, in Device Manager right‑click the same device, select Uninstall device, check Delete the driver software for this device (if available), and uninstall.
      • Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio driver automatically, then test the speakers again.
    5. Compare with headphones
      • Plug in a known‑good pair of headphones.
      • If audio in both left and right channels is clear in the headphones but the laptop’s left speaker still crackles, the issue is likely hardware (the left speaker or its internal connection).

If all software steps above fail and only the left internal speaker crackles while headphones and the right speaker are fine, this strongly indicates a physical speaker or wiring fault, which typically requires hardware service from HP.
