Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see if Windows will boot to a stable system.

    1

If there is an option to uninstall the latest update, that may be the best option.

    2.

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair

See if Windows startup can repair itself.

    3

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

Use the following steps to troubleshoot a black (blank) screen when booting into the Windows 11 sign-in window.

    1. Check power and display connections
    • Make sure the PC is powered on, battery is charged, and the power cable is firmly connected.
    • If using an external monitor, confirm the cable is plugged in, the monitor is powered on, and the correct input source is selected.
    1. Try to wake or reset the display
    • Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen should briefly flicker or a beep may be heard if this works.
    • Press Windows + P, then press P again and Enter to cycle display modes (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend). Repeat a few times in case Windows is sending output to the wrong display.
    1. Check if Windows is responsive
    • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del.
      • If the security screen appears, Windows is running and the issue is likely with the shell or display.
      • From that screen, open Task Manager, go to Processes or Details, and look for Windows Explorer or explorer.exe.
      • If Explorer is present, select it and choose Restart.
    1. If the black screen appears after signing in If the login screen appears but the screen turns black after entering credentials (possibly with a mouse cursor), follow these shell checks:

    4.1 Reset graphics driver again

    • While on the black screen, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once more.

4.2 Verify the shell configuration in the registry

Editing the registry incorrectly can cause serious problems. Back up the registry first using the guidance in How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

    • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
    • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    • In the right pane, find the Shell value and confirm its data is exactly: explorer.exe
      • If it is not explorer.exe, back up the registry, then change it to explorer.exe.
    • Right-click the Winlogon key, select Permissions, and compare with a working device if available to ensure permissions are correct.
    1. Perform a clean boot to isolate startup software If the shell value is correct and the issue persists, perform a clean boot to check if a startup app or service is causing the black screen. Use the steps in How to perform a clean boot in Windows and then test sign-in again.
    2. If Explorer or Userinit is not running or is crashing If access to Task Manager is possible (via Ctrl + Alt + DelTask ManagerDetails tab):
    • Check whether explorer.exe and userinit.exe are running.
      • If they are running, a deeper analysis may be needed using tools like ProcDump to capture dumps of these processes.
      • If they are not running, they may be crashing or failing to start. Advanced troubleshooting uses tools such as Event Viewer, Process Monitor, and ProcDump to capture error details and dumps for analysis or for Microsoft Support.
    1. General blank-screen troubleshooting If the black screen appears at different times (startup, after login, or after an update), basic steps are:
    • Confirm power and cables.
    • Use Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
    • Use Windows + P to change display mode.
    • Use Ctrl + Alt + Del to try starting Task Manager and restarting Windows Explorer.
    • If the system is completely unresponsive, press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds to force a shutdown, then power it back on.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, collect logs (Event Viewer, ProcMon, dumps) as described and contact Microsoft Support for deeper analysis.
