Renew expired "App Service Domain" in Azure

Hi i am looking to renew my expired "App Service Domain" in Azure, i had prior switched off the policy for Auto-renewal and now it has expired, when i try re-purchase the domain, the status is that it, is not available, this is because when i zoom into the "App service domain" settings in Azure, It has a pending status, but not active or expired. Can anyone assist, as i am worried the domain will be taken.

Hi,

This usually happens when the domain is in a grace or pending renewal state after expiration. During this period, the domain is not available for repurchase because it is still linked to your account.

I recommend checking the App Service Domain management section again and looking for a “Renew” option instead of trying to repurchase it. If it remains stuck in a pending state, it could be in a redemption period, which may require additional steps or fees.

If nothing works, the best option is to contact Azure support directly, as they can manually check the domain status and help you recover it before it becomes publicly available.

Manual renewal of an App Service Domain is supported up to 90 days before expiration.

After expiration, the domain is not immediately released. During this post‑expiration phase, the domain may appear with a status such as Pending, and it cannot be re‑purchased, even by the original owner.

Re‑purchasing an expired App Service Domain is not supported until the registrar completes its expiration lifecycle and releases the domain.

Microsoft documentation does not define the exact duration of the Pending state or provide a way to bypass it. These steps are handled by the domain registrar and are not configurable through Azure.

Hi all,

Thank you for your assistance, i will attempt to contact support on the matter, this domain expired on 12 March 2026, I also attempted to renew the domain, through the following portal https://dcc.secureserver.net/control/portfolio/ where the feature could not come to completion as per attached images

Thank you for the update and for sharing the screenshots.

What you’re seeing is expected behavior for App Service Domains after expiration. Although the portal banner still shows “Your domain’s expired, but you can still renew it”, renewal is only supported up to 90 days before the expiration date. Since the domain expired on 12 March 2026, it has now moved into the registrar‑managed post‑expiration (“Pending”) state.

Because of this:

The Renew Now button may still appear in the UI, but attempting to use it results in “This feature is unavailable”
Renewal or re‑purchase is not possible, either from the Azure portal or via the GoDaddy (secureserver.net) portal
Azure Support cannot manually renew or override this state

During the Pending phase, the domain is not released to the public immediately. Once the registrar completes the expiration lifecycle and releases the domain, it will then become available for purchase again.

At this point, the only supported option is to wait until the domain is released and then re‑purchase it (either again as an App Service Domain in Azure or through an external registrar, if available).
