Hi Barry Milner,
For Outlook.com / Outlook on the web, duplicate appointments most commonly come from one of a few scenarios:
- More than one calendar is being displayed at the same time
- The same events were imported or synced more than once
- A recurring appointment (or part of a series) was duplicated
Outlook.com can show multiple calendars simultaneously, and that recurring appointments can be deleted as This event, This and all following events, or All events in the series.
First, check which calendars are being displayed. In the left calendar list, uncheck every calendar except your main one. If the “duplicates” disappear, they were coming from another calendar being shown, not from true duplicates inside the same calendar.
If the duplicates are within the same calendar, the most practical cleanup approach is to work with a list of matching items instead of opening each appointment individually. Outlook.com doesn’t have a traditional list view, but Calendar search displays results in a list format. Search for the duplicated subject or a specific date range, then remove the extra copies directly from the results list. Microsoft confirms that calendar search in Outlook.com / Outlook on the web returns results as a list.
Use extra caution with recurring appointments. Do not delete the entire series unless you’re certain the whole duplicate series is unwanted.
- If only one or a few occurrences are duplicated, choose This event.
- If duplicates begin from a specific point onward, This and all following events may be safer.
- Reserve All events in the series for cases where the entire duplicate series is clearly the bad copy.
These delete options are supported in Outlook.com and help prevent accidental data loss.
To help prevent this in the future, avoid importing the same calendar file more than once, and double‑check whether an additional synced calendar is being displayed. If the duplicate items actually belong to another calendar, hiding or removing that calendar is usually safer than deleting appointments individually.
For reference:
- Create, modify, or delete a meeting request or appointment in Outlook.com
- Working with multiple calendars in Outlook.com
- Search your calendar in Outlook.com
If duplicates still appear after checking visible calendars, sharing how the events were originally added or synced can help determine the next best step.
