Microsoft have closed the loophole allowing users to use Windows 7 or 8 licences to activate Windows 10. The free upgrade period was 2015 to 2016.

The Windows 7 Pro key cannot be used to newly activate a Windows 10 Pro installation anymore. The free upgrade path from Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10 that allowed direct activation with a Windows 7 key has been closed for new activations.

    Key points and options:

    1. Why the Windows 7 key is refused
      • Error 0xC004F050 and similar activation failures occur when the product key cannot be used to activate Windows 10.
      • The free upgrade loophole that previously allowed activating Windows 10 with a Windows 7 key was closed in September 2023, so a Windows 7 key is no longer accepted for activating a new Windows 10 installation or a device that has not been activated with Windows 10 before.
    2. When activation will still work
      • If the same device had Windows 10 Pro activated in the past (from that Windows 7 Pro license) and no significant hardware change was made (especially motherboard), Windows 10 should automatically reactivate via its existing digital license when installed again on that device.
      • If substantial hardware changes were made (for example, motherboard replacement), Windows might no longer be activated and the old upgrade path from Windows 7 cannot be used to activate the new hardware.
    3. What to do now
      • If this is a reinstall on the same hardware that was already activated with Windows 10 Pro, connect to the internet and use the same edition (Windows 10 Pro). Activation should occur automatically via the stored digital license.
      • If this is a new device or a device with a new motherboard that never had Windows 10 Pro activated, a new Windows 10/11 license must be purchased. The Windows 7 Pro key cannot be used to activate it.
      • If the device previously had a digital license linked to a Microsoft account and activation is failing after hardware changes, use the Activation Troubleshooter and the “I changed hardware on this device” option. If that still fails, contact Microsoft Support to see if they can locate and re-activate the existing digital license.
