Disputing a Charge

I bought a subscription to Microsoft 365 personal in November 2025. The subscription is good for a year. Why am I being charged for a renewal? First of all I didn't authorize the renewal. Secondly, my subscription is still good.

There are a few common reasons a renewal charge can appear even though the subscription is still within its current term:

    1. Automatic recurring billing is enabled
Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions are typically set to renew automatically before the end of the current period. If recurring billing is turned on, the system will charge the payment method on file in advance of the expiry date so there is no interruption in service.
    2. The charge may be tied to a different store or account
      • If the subscription was purchased through a third party (for example, a retailer, Google Play, or the Apple App Store), that provider manages the billing and may process renewals on its own schedule. In that case, cancellation and refunds must be handled with that provider.
      • If multiple Microsoft accounts exist, the renewal might be associated with a different Microsoft account than the one being checked.
    3. The subscription is still active and set to renew
Even if the subscription is “good for a year,” it can still be configured to renew automatically near the end of that year. The current term remains valid, but the next term is billed in advance.

    To investigate and resolve:

    1. Check who the subscription was purchased from
      • If it was purchased from a third-party retailer (Amazon, Best Buy, etc.), contact that retailer directly to manage billing and cancellation.
      • If it was purchased from Google Play or the Apple App Store, contact their customer support for cancellation or refund using their refund processes.
    2. Verify the correct Microsoft account and subscription status
      • Sign in with the Microsoft personal account that was used to buy Microsoft 365 and go to the Services & subscriptions page (https://account.microsoft.com/services as referenced in the documentation).
      • Confirm:
        • The subscription type (Microsoft 365 Personal).
        • The current end date.
        • Whether recurring billing is turned on.
    3. If recurring billing is on and an unwanted renewal was charged
      • Turn off recurring billing on the Services & subscriptions page so future renewals are not charged.
      • Check eligibility for a refund using the Microsoft subscription refund process described in the referenced documentation.
    4. If the charge is not recognized or seems fraudulent
      • Use the guidance in “How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft” to identify which account or subscription the charge belongs to.
      • If it cannot be matched to any subscription, contact Microsoft Support directly (Billing/Subscription category) to review the charge and request a correction or refund.

If the subscription was purchased via iOS or another app store, manage or cancel it through the device’s subscription settings (for example, iOS Settings > [name] > Subscriptions) and request any refund through that store’s support.
