I was appearing a certification examination and wearing a earphone connected to my examination laptop device to hear instructions from the proctor. I was interrupted and asked what I was wearing to which I informed properly thats its the audio device connected to examination laptop. Still my exam was cancelled mid way. What to do?

As person that have taken a lot exams that’s frustrating — especially when you were trying to follow instructions. Unfortunately, many remote proctored certification exams have very strict rules about headphones, earbuds, or any audio devices, even if connected to the exam laptop.

Here’s what likely happened and what you can do next.

Why the exam may have been cancelled

Most testing providers (like Pearson VUE, PSI, Prometric, Examity) prohibit:

    • Headphones or earbuds
    • External audio devices
    • Bluetooth devices
    • Multiple audio channels
    • Anything that could allow outside communication

Even if you used the earphone only to hear the proctor, they often require:

****audio must come from the laptop speakers only

The proctor usually has to terminate the exam if they see a prohibited device.

    Steps you should take immediately

    1. Contact the exam provider support

Send an appeal explaining the situation clearly and calmly...

That is what I would do.

Headphones are explicitly against the exam's policies and the proctor correctly terminated the exam

Earphones and other electronic devices are considered unauthorized materials during an online proctored exam unless specifically approved as an accommodation. Proctors can interrupt or revoke/cancel an exam if they observe behavior or items that appear to violate testing rules.

    Next steps:

    1. Do not schedule a new attempt yet.
    2. Contact Microsoft Credentials support and open a ticket describing the incident (exam ID, date/time, delivery method, and that the proctor cancelled the exam after questioning the earphones). Use the dedicated certification support channel so the case can be investigated and, if appropriate, an exam reschedule or other remedy can be arranged.
    3. If an accommodation is needed for future exams (for example, for accessibility reasons), submit an accommodation request in advance so any required devices are explicitly approved before the exam.

For future online exams, ensure that no electronic devices (including headsets/earphones) are worn or within arm’s reach during the exam unless they are part of an approved accommodation, as this can lead to interruption or revocation.
