I had windows 10 pro and changed MB and CPU formated for clean install of windows 11 home. Thought my licence was linked to my account, apparently it doesn't work like that. I tell windows I changed hardware and it still doesn't let me activate. I cant remember my code or when I bought it or which computer came with it. Its been years. Microsoft center tells me I have a windows 10 pro pc.

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

You’ve run into a license mismatch + hardware change problem. To make things easier, can you help me identify the first license that you have, is it a pre-installed one on your computer when you bought it or you bought it separately from a store(retail - bought from store)?

If it came pre-installed, that license is not transferable(tied to motherboard). Only the retail can be transferred.

Let me know so I can assist you further if it's a retail.

First thing, you will need to have Pro edition installed.

Did you buy a Pro upgrade licence from Microsoft?

To upgrade from Home to Pro after a clean install use the generic Pro product key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Make sure the device is completely offline and enter the generic key at Change product key in Settings. Follow any onscreen instructions. This should perform the upgrade process to Pro edition.

Once the process is complete then restart and reconnect to the internet. If Pro does not auto activate using the licence you have then use the activation troubleshooter and select the previous installation to transfer the licence.

Windows 10/11 activation is tied to both the license type and the edition (Home vs Pro), and that is what is blocking activation in this scenario.

    Key points from the situation:

    • The existing digital license is for Windows 10 Pro and is seen by Microsoft as a Windows 10 Pro PC.
    • A clean install of Windows 11 Home was done on new hardware (new motherboard/CPU) and the device now cannot activate.
    • The activation troubleshooter path “I changed hardware on this device recently” does not succeed.

From the documentation and similar cases in the context:

    1. Edition must match the license
Windows 11 activation requires that the installed edition match the license. If the license is for Pro and the device is running Home, activation will fail:
      • “If your license doesn’t match the Windows edition that you bought or are entitled to, Windows will not activate. Check to see which edition you purchased, Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.” In this case, the account shows a Windows 10 Pro device, but the current install is Windows 11 Home, so the digital Pro license cannot activate this Home installation.
    2. Hardware change breaks the original activation binding
When the motherboard and CPU were replaced and a clean install was done, Windows no longer found a matching license for the new hardware:
      • “When you make a significant hardware change on your device, such as replacing your motherboard, Windows will no longer find a license that matches your device, and you’ll need to reactivate Windows.”
    3. What can be done now a. Confirm the installed edition and activation state
      On the current device:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation and confirm that the edition is Windows 11 Home and that it shows as not activated.
      b. If there is a product key available
If at any point a Windows 10 Pro product key was purchased (Retail) and can be found, it can be used to activate or upgrade:
      • On Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter the Pro key.
This will either activate Pro directly or allow upgrading from Home to Pro and then activate.
      c. If there is only a digital Pro license and no key
The context shows that when a digital license is not automatically re-applied after a hardware change and the troubleshooter cannot bind it, the resolution is to contact Microsoft support so they can locate and re-activate the license:
      • In a similar case where a Retail digital license could not be reactivated after a motherboard change and the troubleshooter failed, support reactivated the license manually.
      • In another case, when the troubleshooter and self-service options failed, the moderator explicitly indicated that contacting Microsoft directly was required so they could find the digital license and re-activate Windows.
      d. Edition alignment if reinstalling
If reinstalling again is an option and the license is indeed Pro:
      • Install Windows 11 Pro (or Windows 10 Pro) instead of Home so that the edition matches the Pro license.
      • After installation, sign in with the same Microsoft account and check Settings > System > Activation. If the license is properly associated, it should activate automatically; if not, use Troubleshoot > I changed hardware on this device recently.
    4. If the original license was an old free upgrade
The context notes that some older free-upgrade licenses (e.g., from Windows 7/8 to 10) are no longer allowed to be used for Windows 11 in new transfer scenarios, and the “loophole” of moving them to new devices has been closed. In such cases, even with the same Microsoft account, the digital license may not transfer to a new Windows 11 device, and a new license may be required.

Given all of the above, the practical paths are:

    • Ensure the installed edition matches the license (Pro vs Home). If the license is Pro, install or upgrade to Windows 11 Pro and then try activation again (Change product key or Activation troubleshooter).
    • If there is no product key and the digital license will not re-activate via the troubleshooter, contact Microsoft support so they can look up the Pro digital license and, if eligible, re-activate it for the new hardware.
    • If support confirms the old license cannot be used for the new Windows 11 installation (for example, due to being an old free upgrade), a new Windows 11 license will be required.
