A free program from Microsoft that provides developers with the tools, resources, and sandbox environments needed to build solutions for Microsoft 365.
To regain access to a Microsoft 365 Developer subscription when Microsoft Authenticator is unavailable, use the standard Microsoft account recovery options first, and then Developer Program–specific options if needed.
- If the issue is with the Microsoft account sign-in itself (cannot pass MFA):
- Try any other authentication methods configured on the account (SMS, email, security key, etc.). If Two Step Verification is enabled, two recovery methods are required.
- If Authenticator credentials cannot be restored (for example, no backup account access), restore access to the underlying Microsoft account using the Microsoft account sign-in helper and recovery options:
- Use the Sign-in Helper tool if the password stopped working or the username is not recognized.
- If the password is forgotten, follow the password reset flow for Microsoft accounts.
- If the email/username is forgotten, use the “Forgot my username” flow.
- If Authenticator backup cannot be accessed, add the accounts again after regaining access to the Microsoft account.
- If the problem is specifically that Authenticator backup cannot be restored:
- If unable to recover or restore Authenticator account credentials because the backup account cannot be accessed, support agents cannot directly restore Authenticator data.
- Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper to regain access to the backup Microsoft account, then reconfigure Authenticator from scratch on the new device.
- If the account is a work/school (Entra ID)–backed developer tenant and MFA blocks sign-in:
- If there is another admin on the tenant, that admin can reset MFA settings for the affected account in the Entra/Microsoft 365 admin experience (not detailed in this context, but this is the standard pattern).
- If there is only one admin and that admin is locked out due to MFA, the Data Protection team must be engaged via a support ticket raised through Microsoft support channels (phone or another tenant), as shown in the referenced Q&A resolutions. This process verifies identity and then resets MFA or restores access.
- If the email address used for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program is forgotten:
- On the sign-in page, select Sign-in options → Forgot my username.
- On Recover your username, enter the phone number used to join the Developer Program.
- Enter the security code received, then select the email address used to join and sign in.
- After access is restored:
- Re-add the developer account to Microsoft Authenticator following the standard “add account” flow.
- Consider configuring multiple authentication methods (e.g., Authenticator plus SMS/email) to avoid future lockouts.
