Teams recording won’t save

I recorded a presentation about 20 minutes long and it has been saving since the previous night. I am unsure on how to retrieve this recording or who to contact for help with retrieving it. I wasn’t sure on if it won’t still save if I ended the call so I left the call open which is why the meeting time says 10 hours.

    Dear @T17,

Good day, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern. I understand how concerning this can be, especially when a recording has remained in the “Saving” status since last night and you were unsure whether ending the meeting might cause data loss.

Based on how Microsoft Teams meeting recordings work, the most common cause of this behavior is that the recording was not fully stopped. Teams can only process and upload the recording after it receives a clear stop command. Leaving the meeting open is not required to protect the recording and keeping it open may actually prevent the recording from finalizing.

    Please review the steps below:

    Step 1: Stop the recording

If the meeting is still open and the recording appears to be running, stop it manually. Open the meeting controls. Select More actions. Select Record and transcribe. Select Stop recording.

Once the recording is stopped, Teams will begin processing the file.

Step 2: End or leave the meeting

After stopping the recording, you can safely leave or end the meeting. Ending the meeting doesn't delete the recording. Teams will continue processing the recording in the background until it is saved.

Note: Please keep the Teams application open until the saving process is complete and then verify the file in the indicated storage location.

Step 3: Check the correct storage location

Where the recording is saved depends on the type of meeting.

    • For a standard scheduled meeting that is not in a channel, the recording is saved to the meeting organizer’s OneDrive for Business, in the Recordings folder.

    • For a channel meeting, the recording is saved to the Team’s SharePoint site. Go to the channel. Open the Files or Shared section. Check the Recordings folder.

    • For a one on one or group call, the recording is saved to the OneDrive of the person who started the recording.

This step is the most important, as the recording won't appear in all locations.

Step 4: Check access from Teams

After the meeting ends, the recording link may also appear in Teams.

Check the meeting chat. Open Teams. Go to Chat. Open the meeting chat. Select the Shared tab and look for the recording.

Check the Teams calendar. Go to Calendar. Open the past meeting. Select View Recap. See if the recording is available to play or download.

Step 5: If the recording still doesn't appear

If the recording has been stopped, the meeting has ended and the file doesn't appear in the correct OneDrive or SharePoint location, this usually indicates a processing or policy issue.

At that point, contacting your organization’s IT administrator is recommended. The IT admin can run Microsoft’s Meeting Recording Support Diagnostic in the Microsoft 365 admin center to confirm recording prerequisites and identify any issues that may have prevented the recording from being saved.

The recording is very likely stuck in processing or failed to start/save correctly. Use these steps to check and recover it:

    1. Check the meeting chat in Teams
      • Open Teams and go to the chat for that meeting.
      • Look for a system message like “Recording started” and then a recording item (thumbnail/chiclet).
      • If there is no message that the recording started, the recording never actually began and cannot be recovered.
    2. Confirm the recording really started
      • If you don’t see the “recording started” message, it may be because:
        • There was a service issue when you tried to start recording, or
        • The confirmation dialog after selecting Start recording was closed or canceled. Recording only starts after selecting Confirm.
    3. If you see a recording item but it won’t play or is stuck
      • For non-channel meetings, the file should be in the Recordings folder of the OneDrive of the person who started the recording.
      • For channel meetings, it should be in the team’s SharePoint site under Documents → [Channel name] → Recordings.
      • Open the file directly from OneDrive/SharePoint instead of playing it in Teams chat.
      • If it failed to upload to OneDrive/SharePoint, Teams will store it temporarily for 21 days and show a special recording message in the chat. From there, it can be downloaded locally or re-uploaded.
    4. If you can’t find the file in OneDrive/SharePoint
      • Check the OneDrive recycle bin and second-stage recycle bin in case it was deleted or expired.
    5. If the recording is still missing
      • If there is no “recording started” message in the chat, or the chiclet indicates it was permanently deleted from temporary storage, it cannot be recovered.
      • If this is an organizational (work/school) account, an admin can also run the Missing Recording Diagnostic from the Microsoft 365 admin center to verify whether the recording ever finished and uploaded.

Leaving the meeting running for 10 hours does not by itself prevent saving; what matters is whether the recording actually started (with confirmation) and successfully uploaded.
