Hello! Which exact error message shows when you click the file, and does Word open at all or not open at all?

Follow these steps in order, checking after each step whether Word can open the cloud document.

    1. Make sure OneDrive is running
      • On Windows 11, select Start, type OneDrive, and open the OneDrive desktop app.
      • If Windows previously showed a message like "Can't open file" or "Make sure OneDrive is running", starting the OneDrive app usually resolves it.
    2. Free up OneDrive storage space
      • If the laptop that is out of storage is also full in OneDrive, new saves/edits can fail and files may open read-only or not open correctly.
      • Check OneDrive space:
        • Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area and choose Manage storage, or
        • Go to http://onedrive.live.com, sign in, and check used space in the lower-left corner.
      • If OneDrive is full, delete or move unneeded files from OneDrive until usage is below the quota, then try opening the document again from OneDrive.
    3. Confirm Office/Word is activated
      • If Microsoft 365/Office is not activated or the subscription has expired, Word may not allow editing or may behave unexpectedly.
      • Open Word (even a blank document) and check for any Unlicensed Product or activation error banner. If present, follow the activation guidance in the activation help article referenced below.
    4. Try “Open and Repair” if the file might be damaged
      • If Word starts but the specific document will not open or shows an error:
        1. Open Word.
        2. Select File > Open > Browse.
        3. Navigate to the OneDrive folder that syncs the document locally (or download the file from OneDrive to a local folder first).
        4. Click the file once, select the arrow next to Open, then choose Open and Repair.
      • This can recover a document that has become corrupted.
    5. If Word itself will not open or keeps erroring
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Run an Online Repair of Office (more thorough than the quick/automatic repair). This often reinstalls Office and fixes deeper issues that prevent Word from starting correctly.
      • After repair, sign back into Office with the Microsoft account that has the valid subscription, then try opening the OneDrive document again.
    6. If the issue started recently with OneDrive-synced files
      • Ensure Office and OneDrive are fully updated.
      • Close all Office apps (including Outlook and OneNote), then reopen the file from OneDrive again. A recent sync misconfiguration between Office and OneDrive was fixed by an update; restarting apps after updating resolves it.

If, after these steps, the document still cannot be opened, repeat step 4 (“Open and Repair”) on a copy of the file downloaded from OneDrive, and verify that there is enough free disk space on the Windows 11 device itself (low local disk space can also cause open/save failures).
