Capturing audio, video, and screen content from Teams meetings for later review or sharing
Hi @Nik Gorecki,
Thank you for reaching out, and I appreciate the clear explanation of the recording challenges you’re experiencing in Microsoft Teams. I completely understand how important it is to capture interview content in the exact layout you need - especially when it’s intended for public sharing.
1/ “Can the host video disappear from the recording?”
In standard Teams meetings, recordings capture audio, video, and shared content, but they do not follow your personal view settings. Pinning only affects your own screen, and while spotlighting changes what everyone sees, it doesn’t always guarantee that the recording will match the live layout. Teams records up to four active video streams at a time. If your camera is off, your video normally won’t appear in the recording. There is no built‑in “content‑only” recording mode in regular meetings.
This means that if you join with your camera off and only the two interviewees have their cameras on, the recording will typically display just the interviewees - while you can still start and stop the recording without appearing on screen.

2/ “I want to start the meeting, then have my screen disappear, record only the two speakers, and stop the recording at the end. Is that possible?”
You can do this. Below are flexible options depending on the level of control and polish you want:
Option A: Standard Meeting (simple, no extra licenses)
- Schedule the meeting and open Meeting options.
- Set Who can present to Specific people (select the two interviewees).
- Turn Allow camera for attendees off if you want to ensure only the speakers appear on camera: Manage attendee audio and video permissions in Microsoft Teams meetings.
- Join the meeting with your camera off.
- Start the recording when ready; stop it at the end. Your off‑camera tile won’t appear in the recorded video, and Teams will capture the two speakers’ video streams.
A normal Teams recording with the two presenters’ video (up to four streams total) and any shared content. Your off camera host tile won’t show as video. There’s no “content‑only” toggle; Teams records a standardized layout.
Notes:
- Pinning changes only your personal view; it doesn’t change the recording. Spotlight controls the live view for everyone, but (historically) hasn’t been reliable in the recording. Use roles/camera controls instead.
- Everyone is notified when recording starts (no hidden recording).

Option B: Webinar or Town Hall (producer‑style controls)
If you want more curated control of what appears in the recording, Webinars or Town Halls allow you to choose exactly what attendees - and therefore the recording - see. Using Manage what attendees see, you can bring presenters on and off the screen as needed. This produces a more polished, broadcast‑style output and keeps you off‑screen while still giving you full control over starting and stopping the recording: Manage town hall recordings in Microsoft Teams.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to try these steps and let me know if you run into any issues. I’ll be happy to work with you further to make sure everything records exactly the way you need.
