The error appears when the account signed into Outlook/Office does not have a qualifying Microsoft 365 license, or when the installed apps do not match the subscription type.

    Perform these checks and fixes:

    1. Confirm the subscription type and status
      • Go to the Microsoft account dashboard → Subscriptions at Subscriptions.
      • Verify that the subscription is active and that it is a plan which includes desktop apps (for home use this is typically Microsoft 365 Personal or Family).
      • If the subscription is Microsoft 365 Basic, it does not include desktop Outlook/Excel; it only provides web and mobile apps plus OneDrive storage. In that case, desktop apps will show messages like the one described and will not work until upgrading to a plan with desktop apps.
    2. Make sure the correct account is used in Office apps
      • In Outlook or Excel, go to File → Account.
      • Under User Information, check which account is signed in.
      • If it is not the same account that shows the active Microsoft 365 subscription on the Subscriptions page, select Switch account or Sign out and then sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
      • If available, use Update license or similar option on the Account page to refresh the license after signing in with the correct account.
    3. If the subscription is from work or school
      • Go to the My Account dashboard and select View under Subscriptions.
      • Confirm that a Microsoft 365/Office 365 license is listed. If no license appears, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin to assign one.
    4. If there was a previous or non‑matching Office installation
      • If another edition (for example, an old perpetual Office or a non‑genuine copy) is installed, it can interfere with the Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • Run the Microsoft 365 Uninstall troubleshooter from the article about the “We’ve run into a problem with your Office 365 subscription” error to remove mismatched Office installations, then reinstall Microsoft 365 from the subscription.

If, after these steps, the account only has Microsoft 365 Basic, desktop Outlook and Excel will continue to show subscription-required messages; in that case, use the web versions via Microsoft 365 Online apps or upgrade to a plan that includes desktop apps.
