The pop‑ups appear because the OneDrive cloud storage linked to the Microsoft account is still active and either:
- The account has not been used for a long time, or
- The storage limit in the cloud has been exceeded or is close to full,
even if OneDrive was removed or disabled on the Lenovo laptop.
Removing or not using the OneDrive app on the device does not delete or disable the OneDrive cloud storage that belongs to the Microsoft account. As long as that cloud storage exists and is near or over quota, Microsoft will continue to send storage‑limit notifications.
To stop “storage full” or “buy more storage” messages, the OneDrive cloud storage must either be:
- Reactivated and cleaned up so it is under quota, or
- Left unused but kept under quota so it is not flagged for deletion.
Steps to reduce or clear OneDrive cloud storage:
- Sign in to OneDrive in a browser and see what is using space: use the “View files” page to locate large or unneeded files and folders.
- Delete unneeded items from OneDrive.
- Open the OneDrive Recycle Bin online and select Empty recycle bin so deleted items no longer count toward the quota.
- Note that emptying the Windows Recycle Bin on the Lenovo does not empty the OneDrive online Recycle Bin.
- Wait up to 24 hours for the storage quota display and related notifications to update.
If the account is still over quota after removing everything that is not needed, the only supported options are to remove more content or purchase additional storage.
If OneDrive has not been used in about two years and is over its storage limit, Microsoft may also send messages that files will be erased on a certain date. To prevent that, sign in to OneDrive before the date shown and ensure the storage is under quota.
OneDrive storage itself cannot be deleted separately from the Microsoft account; it is a built‑in part of the account. The app can be removed or disabled on the Lenovo, but the cloud storage continues to exist and may still generate quota‑related notifications until the stored data is reduced or the account is no longer over quota.
