I am unable to sign in to my account on any of the office programs. Every time it says I need to be connected to the internet and gives me this error code. I am connected, but I am abroad and require a VPN just to be able to access the sign in to any microsoft websites/content

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and released a fix for Windows 11 devices. This confirms that the problem is related to the March security updates you installed on March 10, 2026—KB5079473 (OS Builds 26200.8037 and 26100.8037).

    So, before you do anything,

Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.

See if you might have KB5085516 available to install.

Error 0x800704cf with “need to be connected to the internet” while abroad and using a VPN usually indicates that Office cannot reach the Microsoft 365 sign-in/activation endpoints, even though general internet access works.

Use these steps to isolate and fix it:

    1. Verify Office build and basic connectivity
      • Make sure Office is updated to a recent build (for example, at least 16.0.9126.2259 for Office 2016 or later). Older builds can have sign‑in issues.
      • In a browser (preferably Edge), while connected to the VPN, go to https://login.microsoftonline.com and complete sign‑in. If this fails, the issue is with the VPN/network, firewall, or DNS, not the Office apps.
      • Try the same in an InPrivate/Incognito window. If sign‑in still fails, treat it as a network/VPN problem.
    2. Check if the VPN/firewall is blocking Microsoft 365 endpoints Office activation and sign‑in must reach specific Microsoft 365 endpoints. If the VPN or local firewall blocks or intercepts them, Office shows “need internet” even when online. Ask the VPN provider or, if applicable, the local firewall admin to allow access to at least these key endpoints used for sign‑in and activation:
      • login.microsoftonline.com
      • login.microsoft.com
      • login.windows.net
      • officecdn.microsoft.com
      • activation.sls.microsoft.com
      • officeclient.microsoft.com
      • aadcdn.msauth.net
      • aadcdn.msauthimages.net
If a corporate or country‑level proxy is in use, it may require additional configuration or a PAC file so Microsoft 365 traffic can bypass restrictive proxies.
    3. Test without the VPN (if possible)
      • Temporarily disconnect the VPN and try:
        • Signing in at https://www.office.com in a browser.
        • Signing in from an Office app (for example, Word → Account → Sign in).
      • If sign‑in works without the VPN but fails with it, the VPN routing/DNS is the cause. In that case, either:
        • Use a different VPN endpoint/location, or
        • Configure split tunneling/allow‑lists so Microsoft 365 endpoints are not blocked.
    4. Check for DNS misconfiguration
      • If using custom DNS (from the VPN or local router), ensure there is no incorrect CNAME for Microsoft sign‑in, especially any MSOID CNAME pointing to clientconfig.partner.microsoftonline-p.net.cn, which can break sign‑in.
    5. If still blocked from sign‑in
      • Use a different network (mobile hotspot or another Wi‑Fi) without the VPN to activate Office once. After successful activation, Office is more tolerant of intermittent connectivity.
      • If the environment forces a VPN, work with the VPN/network provider to open the Microsoft 365 URLs and IP ranges as described in the Microsoft 365 endpoints documentation referenced below.
