    Hi Simon Baas,

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how concerning it can be when your laptop is unable to download Windows 11 and you’re also experiencing no sound. These issues are often related to update components or device settings and can usually be resolved with the troubleshooting steps below.

If Windows Update is not completing the download, using official installation media is a reliable workaround:

    • Create Windows 11 installation media (USB) using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool on a working PC - Download Windows 11
    • Insert the USB into your laptop and open File Explorer.
    • Run setup.exe from the USB drive.
    • Select Keep personal files and apps, then proceed with the installation.

Audio issues are commonly caused by output selection or driver configuration:

    • Go to Settings > System > Sound and confirm the correct output device is selected.
    • Ensure the volume is not muted and the level is turned up.
    • Select More sound settings, set your speakers as the Default device.
    • In Sound settings, turn Audio enhancements off.
    • Run the built‑in Audio troubleshooter from the Get Help app.

These steps are designed to address the most common causes without affecting your personal files. If the issue continues after completing these steps, additional device‑specific support may be helpful.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    Please clarify the following:

    • What exactly is happening when trying to download Windows 11?
    • Is an error message displayed? If so, which one?

Also. Have you checked your computer with PC Health Check to identify any unmet Windows 11 requirements?

If not, download the PC Health Check from the link below, install it, and see which requirements your computer meets and if there are any that it currently does not meet.

    https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp

After opening PC Health Check, under "Introducing Windows 11", click "Check now".

If you want, share a screenshot of the result. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Regarding the sound problem, it's best to leave that for later, after you download Windows 11. I'll help you with that too.

    Looking forward to your reply.

AI generated content. This question contains an answer created with AI from Q&A Assist. Learn more

Follow these steps in order, checking after each step.

    1. Confirm Windows 11 is offered for the device
      1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (or Start > Settings > Windows Update on newer builds).
      2. Select Check for updates.
      3. If Windows 11 is ready, a message will appear that Windows 11 is available with a Download and install button. Select Download and install and follow the prompts.
      4. If Windows 11 is not offered, install any pending updates for the current Windows version, restart, then check again.
    2. Make sure there is enough free disk space
      1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      2. Select This PC on the left.
      3. Under Devices and drives, check free space on the system drive (usually C: with the Windows logo on it).
      4. If space is low, follow the built‑in cleanup guidance (for example, using Cleanup recommendations or removing temporary files) until there is sufficient free space, then try Windows Update again.
    3. Check if a safeguard hold is blocking the Windows 11 upgrade
      1. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      2. Select Check for updates.
      3. If a compatibility hold is applied, a message such as “Upgrade to Windows 11 is on its way to your device. There is nothing that requires your attention at the moment…” will appear with a Learn more link.
      4. Open the Learn more link to see which safeguard applies. For example, some devices with specific audio components (such as Dirac Audio with cridspapo.dll) are temporarily blocked from installing certain Windows 11 versions until audio issues are resolved. In this case, wait until the safeguard is removed and the upgrade is offered.
    4. Fix the no‑sound problem in the current Windows version Work through these audio checks before or after the upgrade attempt:
      1. Run the audio troubleshooter
        • Open the Get Help app for audio issues or use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the audio troubleshooter (wording may vary by version). Let it detect and fix problems.
      2. Verify microphone and app audio permissions (if the issue is with mic or app audio)
        • Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
        • Under App permissions, select Microphone.
        • Turn Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone to On.
        • For a specific app, ensure its toggle under Let apps access your microphone is On.
      3. Check audio devices and drivers
        • Open Device Manager and confirm an audio device is listed and working.
        • If no audio device is installed or it shows an error, install or update the audio driver from the device manufacturer’s support site.
        • If the problem started after a recent driver update, try rolling back the driver in Device Manager.
    5. If Windows 11 still will not install
      • Confirm again that:
        • Windows Update shows Windows 11 as ready (no safeguard message).
        • There is enough free disk space on the system drive.
      • If an error appears during installation, use the guidance under Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors to troubleshoot that specific error code.

If the device is under a safeguard hold due to an audio compatibility issue, do not try to force the upgrade with manual tools; wait until Windows Update offers Windows 11 after the issue is resolved.
