I am having several issues with PowerPoint. Text won't do what I want, Layouts keep changing and every time I add a new template something goes wrong after I start to engage with it. I think my Powerpoint is corrupt. How do I check that I have the latest version and its running OK?

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

If Microsoft PowerPoint on macOS is behaving unpredictably (text glitches, layouts changing, templates breaking), it can be corruption, but there are a few things to check first before reinstalling(reinstallation is needed if really corrupt).

First, open PowerPoint and on the top menu → Help → check for updates. This opens Microsoft autoupdate, click check for updates and Install anything available.

Next, you need to isolate and try creating a NEW blank presentation and use a default theme, add some texts and layout. If everything works fine without glitches then the problem is with the file you're working on not PowerPoint itself.

Let me know once done so I can assist you further.

To check that PowerPoint for Mac is up to date and to address possible corruption, follow these steps in order:

    1. Check for the latest Office updates (Mac)
Keeping Office current fixes many stability and layout issues.
      • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint if it opens).
      • On the menu bar, select Help > Check for Updates.
      • Install any important, recommended, or optional updates that are offered.
      • Restart the Mac and test PowerPoint again.
    2. Test whether the issue is with the user profile or background apps
Corrupted user data or interfering background programs can cause layout and behavior problems.
    3. Check for known PowerPoint for Mac issues
Some layout, font, and rendering problems are caused by known bugs or font issues rather than corruption:
      • Review current issues and workarounds in “Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in PowerPoint for Mac”.
      • If text, spacing, or layouts change unexpectedly, also check:
        • Office documents are not rendering as expected
        • Issues with fonts in Office for macOS
These articles list active/mitigated bugs and font-related problems that can affect how text and layouts behave.
    4. Repair or reinstall Office if corruption is suspected
If PowerPoint still behaves incorrectly after updating and testing in a new user/Safe Mode, the installation may be damaged.
      • Follow the guidance to remove and then reinstall Office for Mac. For older versions, see:
        • Troubleshoot Office 2011 for Mac issues by completely uninstalling before you reinstall.
      • After reinstalling, run Help > Check for Updates once to ensure the latest build is installed, then test PowerPoint with a new blank presentation and a built‑in template.
    5. If PowerPoint crashes or hangs while editing
If, in addition to layout issues, PowerPoint freezes or shows a spinning wheel:
      • Follow the steps in PowerPoint isn't responding, hangs or freezes:
        1. Install the latest Office updates.
        2. Investigate add‑ins and disable any that might interfere.
        3. Repair Office.
      • For Mac-specific “stops responding” scenarios, also see PowerPoint stops responding (spinning wheel) and test saving/opening files in Safe Mode.

If, after these steps, a new blank presentation and built‑in templates behave correctly, PowerPoint itself is likely healthy and the remaining issues may be with specific templates or files (for example, corrupted theme, problematic fonts, or images). In that case, recreate the template from a fresh built‑in theme and re‑apply content gradually to see when the behavior starts.
