trouble logging into my account due to bar code

When I try logging into my account, it keeps trying to make me scan a bar code, and I have no way to do that. I need to talk with someone on the phone to get another way to log into my account. I don't use bar codes at all.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Could you please confirm whether it is a QR code or a barcode?

Also, is this problem occurring only on a specific device you are trying to sign in from? For example, try opening an incognito/private browsing tab on your mobile browser and signing in with your Microsoft account there. Let me know if you are able to sign in successfully.

When you are asked to scan a barcode (usually a QR code is displayed if you have a passkey tied to that specific device), do you see a Cancel option similar to the one shown in the screenshot below, and can you choose a different verification method during sign-in?

The barcode screen is part of multifactor authentication (MFA), usually used with the Microsoft Authenticator app. When that is the only configured method and the device or app is unavailable, another verification method or admin/help-desk assistance is required.

Use the path that matches the type of account:

    1. Work or school (organization) account
    • On the sign-in screen where the barcode/Authenticator prompt appears, look for a “Sign in another way” link.
      • If it is available, select it and choose an alternative method (for example, phone call, SMS, or office phone) and complete sign-in.
      • If “Sign in another way” does not appear, no alternative methods are configured.
    • In that case, contact the organization’s IT help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator and ask them to reset MFA for the account. They can do this in the Microsoft Entra admin center by requiring re‑registration of multifactor authentication.
    • After the admin resets MFA, sign in again and set up a new method (for example, SMS or phone call) instead of using the barcode/Authenticator.
    1. Personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, etc.)
    • If this is a personal account and the barcode/Authenticator prompt blocks access, use the account recovery/sign‑in helper flow and choose I don’t have any of these when asked for a verification method, then follow the prompts to prove account ownership.
    • If codes are not arriving or no method works, use the Sign-in helper and Contact Microsoft Support options described in the verification-code troubleshooting article. Support agents cannot bypass security or send codes, but they can guide through the supported recovery steps.
    1. If the mobile device with Authenticator is unavailable
    • If an alternative method (SMS, phone call, office phone) was previously added, use Sign in another way and select that method.
    • If no alternative method exists, only an admin (for work/school accounts) or the self-service recovery process (for personal accounts) can restore access.

    For phone assistance:

    • For work/school accounts where the user is the only admin and locked out by MFA, Microsoft’s Data Protection/Support team must be contacted via the regional customer service phone number. The frontline agent can route the call to the appropriate team after confirming that this is the only admin account.

After access is restored, configure at least one non-barcode method (such as SMS or phone call) as an additional sign-in option so that scanning a barcode is not required in the future.
