How do I remove Windows 11 files from my lap top?

I have a desktop, being my main computer. My daughter thought I needed a lap top, so got me one and set it up as carbon copy of my desktop. I don't use the lap top and want to remove everything from that Windows 11, so it is not a carbon copy of my Desktop, or connected to any part of my Desktop. I may sell the lap top. It is brand new (the lap top). The desktop is just over 1 year old. Where do I find step by step directions to do this, without it affecting my Desktop functions?

If all your files from the PC appear on the laptop, and if you make changes to a file on your PC and those changes are reflected on the laptop, then your daughter set up OneDrive to sync your files between the two devices.

If this is the case, do not delete your files manually from the laptop, because they would also be deleted form the PC.

If you intend to sell the laptop, then the best option is to create a new user account (not associated to your Microsoft account) on the laptop and delete the current account from the laptop to remove all your files and settings from the laptop.

    Open the Settings App

Go to Accounts - Other Users.

    Click 'Add Account'.

Follow the prompts to create a new account, ensure you choose the option 'I do not know this person's details' so you do not have to add Microsoft account details and the new account is a local account.

    Close the settings app

Log out of the original user account

    Log into your new account

Click the Start Button, type netplwiz and hit Enter

In the resulting dialog, select the old account and click 'Remove'

That's It, your new Admin Account will replace the old account with all your files and settings.

To remove all personal data from the Windows 11 laptop without affecting the desktop, reset the laptop and then remove it from the Microsoft account. The reset only affects that specific device.

Follow these steps on the laptop:

    1. Back up anything you might want from the laptop
If there are any files on the laptop that should be kept, back them up first (for example, using Windows Backup or copying to external storage).
    2. Reset the Windows 11 laptop (erase everything)
This removes personal files, apps, and settings from the laptop only.
      1. On the laptop, select Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
      2. Under Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
      3. Choose Remove everything (or Erase everything if shown), then follow the on‑screen instructions to erase the drive.
This returns the laptop to a fresh Windows state suitable for selling or gifting. It does not change anything on the desktop.
    3. Optionally use “clean data” if planning to sell
During reset, if a Clean data or similar option is offered, enable it to make it harder for others to recover removed files. This takes longer but is recommended before selling or gifting.
    4. Remove the laptop from the Microsoft account
      After the reset completes:
      1. On any device, go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
      2. Find the laptop in the device list and select Show details.
      3. Select More actions > Remove.
      4. Check I'm ready to remove this device, then select Remove.
      5. If an Unlink option is shown, select Unlink, review details, and confirm.

After these steps, the laptop will no longer contain personal files or apps and will no longer be associated with the Microsoft account, while the desktop remains unchanged.
