I understand how frustrating it is when your laptop appears unmuted but still produces no sound through the internal speakers. Please try the following:
Step 1: Verify that internal speakers are selected and active
Even if Windows shows sound, confirm the internal speaker is actually active:
- Press Win + R, type
mmsys.cpl, press Enter - Under the “Playback” tab:
- Make sure “Speakers” (Realtek / Lenovo audio) are set as Default
- When playing a test sound, check whether you see green level bars moving
This is an official Windows audio check also recommended by Lenovo for ThinkPad systems.
Step 2: Restart the Lenovo hotkey service
On many ThinkPads, the mute light is controlled by Lenovo’s hotkey service, which can get stuck even when Windows audio is fine:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc > open Task Manager
- Go to “Services”
- Find “Lenovo Hotkey Client Loader”
- Right‑click it > “Restart”
