Hi,

When I save and close or just close a word doc, it immediately re-opens, again and again. I have restarted mackbook, reinstalled word, all up to date. trie saving to USB drive. Chnaging file name works, until I open it again. It is all word docs.

Is this a known issue? What should I do? Driving me up the wall as I can't work and have deadlines.

Thank you for your help,

J

Hi Jacqui Armour (LDC - Student),

When this happens with all Word documents, it often points to Word for Mac’s local settings or startup state rather than a single file. Common causes include a corrupted Normal.dotm template, damaged Word preferences, a stuck AutoRecovery state, or interference from a background or login item.

Since you mentioned deadlines, a helpful temporary workaround is to use Save As with a new file name so you can continue working while troubleshooting.

Please try the steps below, in order:

    1. Test in Safe Mode: Start the Mac in Safe Mode and test Word. If the issue does not occur there, a background or login item is likely involved.
    2. Reset Normal.dotm Quit Word, then look for Normal.dotm in:
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/
    • ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates/

Move it to the Desktop, reopen Word, and test again. (This may reset custom styles or macros.)

    1. Reset Word preferences Quit Word, then move this file to the Desktop:
    • ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist

    Restart Word and test.

    1. Clear AutoRecovery files Check:
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery/

Move the contents to the Desktop and test again. (Review files first in case they contain unsaved work.)

If the issue continues, please let me know:

    • Whether it also happens in Safe Mode
    • Whether resetting Normal.dotm or the preference file changes anything
    • Whether the files are stored locally, in OneDrive, or on external storage

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

This behavior is not listed as a known issue in the provided material, but it is consistent with Word for Mac having corrupted preferences, a damaged Normal template, or a problematic document that causes Word to hang and then auto‑reopen.

Use the supported Word for Mac repair steps:

    1. Exit Word and all other Office apps.
    2. Reset Word preferences:
      1. In Finder, select Go > Home.
      2. Open Library. (If Library is hidden, hold OPTION while clicking the Go menu.)
      3. Open Preferences.
      4. Locate the file named com.microsoft.word.plist and move it to the desktop.
      5. Start Word and test closing a simple document. If the problem is fixed, delete the plist file from the desktop. If not, quit Word and restore the file, then continue.
      6. Exit all Office apps again.
      7. Go to Home > Library > Preferences > Microsoft.
      8. Locate com.microsoft.word.prefs.plist and move it to the desktop.
      9. Start Word and test again. If fixed, delete this file; if not, restore it.
    3. Reset the Normal template:
      1. Exit all Office apps.
      2. In Finder, select Go > Home.
      3. Open Library (using OPTION on the Go menu if needed).
      4. Open Application Support > Microsoft > Office > User Templates.
      5. Locate the file named Normal and move it to the desktop.
      6. Start Word and test closing/opening documents. If the issue is resolved, delete the Normal file from the desktop.
    4. If documents still misbehave after resetting preferences and Normal:
      1. Try opening Word in a clean environment (Safe Mode / clean startup) to rule out interference from background software, as described in the referenced clean‑startup article.
      2. If only specific documents cause the behavior, those files may be corrupted beyond recovery; in that case, restore from a backup or recreate them.

If all these steps fail, the document(s) or the profile may be corrupted beyond what these repairs can fix, and restoring from backup or recreating the affected documents is the remaining option.
