Hi @Lori Linstead,
Good day, and thank you for reaching out. I understand how concerning it can be to open Outlook and discover that your email folders appear to be missing, especially when they contain important work‑related information.
In most cases, this behavior is not caused by data loss. It is usually related to a view, navigation pane, Outlook profile, or local cache issue, or Outlook may be displaying a different mailbox or data file than expected.
Here are suggestion steps you can try to troubleshoot:
1/ Check Outlook on the web (OWA)
- Open a browser > go to https://outlook.cloud.microsoft/
- Sign in with the same work account.
- Review your folder list
If the folders appear in Outlook on the web > Your mailbox data is safe, and the issue is isolated to the desktop Outlook view, cache, or profile.
If the folders are missing in Outlook on the web as well > The folders may have been moved or deleted, and recovery steps will be required.
2/ Make sure the Folder Pane is turned on
- Go to the View tab
- Select Folder Pane > Normal
Also try:
- View > Change View > Compact, or
- View > Reset View, if available
This often resolves cases where the folder list is hidden.
3/ Check for filters hiding folders or messages
- Go to View > View Settings > Filter…
- Click Clear All, then OK
Also verify that Outlook is not stuck in search mode:
- Click inside the search bar
- Choose All Mailboxes or Current Mailbox
- Click the X to exit the search results.
4/ Reset the Navigation Pane (very common fix)
Close Outlook completely before proceeding.
- Press Windows + R
- Run: outlook.exe /resetnavpane.
If needed, reset folders and clean views, you can try these one at a time (Outlook closed each time):
outlook.exe /resetfolders
outlook.exe /cleanviews
5/ If folders exist in Outlook on the web, rebuild the local cache (OST)
If OWA is showing the folders correctly but desktop Outlook is not, the local cache may be damaged or out of sync.
- Close Outlook
- Open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles
- (Optional) Click Data Files to note the OST location
- Navigate to the default location:
C:\Users<your username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ - Rename the OST file, for example:
yourname.ost > yourname.ost.old - Reopen Outlook and allow it to fully re‑sync
This does not delete any server‑stored email and forces Outlook to rebuild the mailbox structure.
6/ If folders are also missing in Outlook on the web: recover them
a. Check Deleted Items
- Expand Deleted Items and Archive (if used)
- Search for messages that were previously in the missing folders
- Right‑click a message > Move > Other Folder to see if the original folder appears
b. Use Recover Deleted Items (Exchange / Microsoft 365 only)
- Click Deleted Items
- Go to the Folder tab
- Select Recover Deleted Items
- Look for deleted messages or folder‑related entries and restore them.
If the issue persists:
If this is a work mailbox and the folders are still missing, I recommend contacting your IT administrator. Depending on your organization’s policies, they may be able to:
- Recover items from the Recoverable Items folder
- Review mailbox audit or retention policies
- Restore deleted content using compliance tools
- Or open a support ticket with Microsoft for deeper investigation.
I hope these steps help clarify what’s happening and guide you toward restoring your folders. Please try them in order and let me know the results. If the problem continues, I’ll be happy to assist you further.
