Alias restoration / email release

My primary alias was unexpectedly removed from my account, and I’m unable to add it back. When I attempt to restore it, I receive a message stating that the account does not exist. However, after further troubleshooting, I learned that the alias still exists but has been placed on hold for up to 30 days.

This alias is my main email address for billing, family communication, and other essential matters. Being without access to it for an entire month is not a workable option. I understand the security rationale behind the policy, but I need a path to verify my identity and regain access to the primary alias associated with my account. How can I complete that verification and restore the alias as soon as possible?

Thank you,

Rebecca Papa

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Please note that a Microsoft email address (alias) and a security verification method (recovery email address) are different.

Alias – An alias is an alternate email address that you use to sign in to your Microsoft account. It shares the same Outlook email, OneDrive storage, and contact lists as your primary email address.

So, if you remove the Microsoft domain email address on the Manage how you sign in to your account page, please note that you are permanently deleting that email address, and it cannot be associated with any other Microsoft account again.

You also cannot recreate that email address. See,

Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com

    =======================================================================

Security information – This is an alternate security contact method, such as a recovery phone number or email address, used to verify your identity. During sign-in, you may be asked to verify your identity to prove that you are the owner of the account.

If you remove all of your previous security information and replace it with something new, your account will be put into a restricted state for 30 days. Microsoft cannot expedite the 30‑day waiting period.

So, first check whether you removed the alias or the security information from your Microsoft account.

What does “Security info change is still pending” mean?

Alias restoration before the 30‑day hold expires is not possible.

When an alias from a Microsoft-owned domain such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, @msn.com, or @msn.com is removed from a Microsoft account, it is permanently deleted as an alias and cannot be associated with any Microsoft account again. The address may show as being on hold for a period, but there is no supported process to verify identity and reattach or “release” that alias back to the same or another Microsoft account.

    The only available options are:

    1. Add and use a different alias
      • Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and add another email address or phone number as an alias.
      • Set that new alias as the primary alias for sign-in and communication.
    2. Do not remove any remaining Microsoft-domain aliases
      • If any other @outlook.com/@hotmail.com/@live.com/@msn.com aliases remain on the account, keep them; removing them would permanently delete those as well.
    3. Update contacts and services
      • Since the removed alias cannot be restored, update billing, family, and other critical services to use the new primary alias or another active address.

There is no escalation path or identity-verification flow that overrides this behavior for a deleted Microsoft-domain alias.
