    Hi Vaishnavi,

Thank you for reaching out about your Azure for Students subscription sign-up.

Brief summary You're receiving a generic "Something went wrong" error while trying to create your Azure for Students profile and subscription. This is a very common issue during the sign-up flow and is almost always caused by browser cache/cookies, a Microsoft account conflict, or a hiccup in the academic email verification step.

Recommended steps (start here — these resolve it for most students):

    1. Try a clean browser session (most effective first step)
    • Open a new Incognito / InPrivate window (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome/Edge)
    • Sign out of all Microsoft accounts
    1. Use your official school/university email
      • Sign up with your academic email address
      • The system will automatically verify your student status or ask you to upload proof (student ID, admission letter, or current semester receipt)
      1. Clear browser cache/cookies or switch to Microsoft Edge if you’re using another browser.

For Azure for Students sign-up failures that only show a generic “something went wrong” message, use the same troubleshooting flow as standard Azure sign-up and then contact support if it still fails.

    1. Verify account and profile data
      • Go to the Microsoft account center and confirm that billing and shipping details are complete and valid.
      • Ensure the contact email, street address, and phone number are correct and consistent.
      • Make sure the credit card or verification details used during sign-up match bank records if a card step is involved.
    2. Check common eligibility and account-type issues
      • If there was any Azure subscription in the past with this identity, the free trial offer is not available. In that case, only a pay-as-you-go subscription can be created.
      • If the error shown is similar to “You are not eligible for an Azure subscription” or “Your current account type is not supported”, check:
        • The Azure account profile information is correct.
        • Credit card information (if requested) is correct.
        • There is no other Microsoft account using the same identity information.
      • If the account is in an unmanaged Microsoft Entra directory, either:
        • Use another account to sign up, or
        • Take over the unmanaged directory as an administrator, then retry sign-up. See “Take over an unmanaged directory as administrator in Microsoft Entra ID”.
    3. Browser and sign-in troubleshooting
      • Clear browser cache and cookies, or try a different browser.
      • Use InPrivate/Incognito mode and sign in only with the student account being used for Azure for Students.
    4. If the subscription was created but is disabled
      • If Azure for Students was created but is now disabled because credit expired, it must be upgraded to a pay-as-you-go subscription by contacting Azure support from the portal.
      • If it was accidentally canceled, it can be reactivated by contacting Azure support.
    5. If sign-up still fails
      • If the generic error persists after validating profile, eligibility, and browser, contact Azure Billing/Subscription support and provide details of the error screen and the account being used so they can check for account flags or eligibility issues.
