For Microsoft 365 bought online, a separate product key is usually not provided or needed.
When Microsoft 365 is purchased to use as a subscription (for example Microsoft 365 Family or Personal), the subscription is attached to the Microsoft account used at purchase. Activation is done by signing in with that Microsoft account inside the Office apps, not by entering a product key.
A product key is only provided in specific cases, such as when buying a physical product key card or certain OEM/preinstalled offers. In those cases:
- The key is printed on a product key card in the format
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, sometimes hidden under a scratch‑off foil.
- New Windows PCs that include Microsoft 365 typically use a digital product key transmitted to the PC when Windows is activated, so no printed key is given; activation is done by following the prompts in Word or another Office app and signing in.
If the purchase was online and no key was sent, sign in at Office.com or in any Office app with the same Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365 and complete activation there. If a product key card was purchased but no key is visible, carefully scratch the foil area to reveal it.
If the seller promised a product key and none was provided (for example, a third‑party online seller), contact that seller for the key or a refund.
