Clock app in the wrong language.

Windows 11 is in English (UK); my keyboard is US International and the language I type in is set to Portuguese. Everything was working fine, until Office asked me to download Portuguese for proofreading and now there's an app in Portuguese and I suspect the OS will change the display language when I reboot.

Pls help!

    Hi uaquo,

    Thank you for reaching out.

I understand your concern about seeing Portuguese appear after installing Office proofreading tools. To clarify, Windows display language, keyboard layout, typing language, and Office proofreading settings are managed independently. Installing Portuguese for Office proofreading does not automatically change the Windows display language.

In addition to Q&A Assist's answer, please review the checking steps below to ensure your system remains exactly as you want it:

1, Keep Windows display language in English (UK)

    • Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region
    • Confirm Windows display language is set to English (United Kingdom)
    • If this is already selected, Windows will not change its display language after a restart.

2, Use Portuguese only for typing (not system language)

    • In Language & region, check Preferred languages
    • Keep English (United Kingdom) at the top
    • Ensure Portuguese is listed only as an additional language
    • Select Portuguese > Language options
    • Keep your desired keyboard (for example, US‑International) and remove unused layouts if needed

3, Keep Office menus in English, proofreading in Portuguese

    • Open any Office app (such as Word)
    • Select File > Options > Language
    • Under Office display language, set English as Preferred
    • Under Office authoring languages and proofing, keep Portuguese enabled for spelling and grammar

If you notice anything unexpected after restarting, these same settings can be quickly re‑checked. You’re on the right track, and once configured this way, the setup is stable and supported.

HI, I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.
Make sure English is the first language on the language list.
The first language on the list is the one that sets the language for Windows apps.
You can drag the language to change its position on the list.

The Clock app or parts of Windows showing Portuguese does not mean the Windows display language will automatically switch on reboot. Windows, Store apps, Office proofing tools, and typing language are controlled by different settings.

To keep Windows in English and stop unwanted Portuguese UI while still typing in Portuguese, check and adjust these areas:

    1. Confirm Windows display language is English
      1. Open Settings.
      2. Go to Time & language > Language & region.
      3. Under Windows display language, make sure English (United Kingdom) is selected.
      4. If it is already set to English, Windows will not change the overall UI language on reboot.
    2. Control which language apps (like Clock) use Windows Store apps use the first supported language in the Preferred languages list, which can be different from the Windows display language.
      1. In Settings > Time & language > Language & region, look at Preferred languages.
      2. If Portuguese is at the top, apps may show Portuguese.
      3. Drag English (United Kingdom) to the top of Preferred languages so it is first.
      4. Keep Portuguese below English so you can still type in Portuguese, but apps will prefer English.
This reordering does not change the Windows display language; it only affects Microsoft Store apps and websites.
    3. Keep Portuguese only for typing and proofing If Portuguese is needed only for typing and spellcheck:
      1. Leave Portuguese in Preferred languages, but not at the top.
      2. Ensure the keyboard layout and proofing tools for Portuguese are installed as needed (for example, via Office’s language preferences and Windows keyboard settings), without setting Portuguese as the Windows display language.
    4. If an app is still in Portuguese After changing the Preferred languages order, close and reopen the Clock app. If needed, sign out and sign back in so the app picks up the new language preference.

These steps keep Windows 11 and apps like Clock in English while still allowing Portuguese typing and Office proofing.
