How to switch as a participant on 365 Family to my own 365 personal

Question

I am a participant on a Microsoft 365 Family plan, but not the owner. How do I remove myself from their subscription and then purchase the personal plan. Do I need the owner to remove me from their subscription or can I do that myself? I do not want to affect their subscription, I just want to have my own.

Yes, you can remove yourself and it will not affect the owner’s subscription in any way.

Reminder: As soon as you leave you will lose Microsoft 365 benefits immediately. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

First, go to: https://account.microsoft.com/family and sign in. You need to find your name and click it, after that you should see an option to select "Leave family group" then Confirm. This immediately removes you from the shared subscription.

A participant can leave a Microsoft 365 Family subscription without affecting the owner’s subscription, then purchase a separate Microsoft 365 Personal plan.

1. Leave the existing Family subscription
   • Go to the Microsoft 365 Family sharing page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing (sign in with the account that is currently using the Family subscription).
   • If not the owner, the page shows who is sharing Microsoft 365 Family and provides an option to leave the subscription.
   • Choose the option to leave/stop using the shared subscription. After leaving, all shared benefits (extra OneDrive storage, desktop apps, etc.) are removed only for that account; the owner’s subscription and other participants are not affected.
   If the option to leave is not visible, the owner can remove the participant instead:
   • The owner signs in at https://account.microsoft.com/services and selects Sharing.
   • Under Other people, they select the participant and choose Stop sharing. This only removes that person’s access and does not cancel or change the Family subscription.
2. Purchase Microsoft 365 Personal
   • After leaving the Family subscription, sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services with the same Microsoft account.
   • Purchase a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription from the Subscriptions or purchase area.
   • Once active, the account uses the new Personal subscription independently of the former Family plan.

No data is merged or moved between accounts; the same Microsoft account simply stops using the shared Family benefits and starts using its own Personal subscription.
