A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the account was hacked and the two-factor authentication (2FA) or security info was changed, recovery is only possible through Microsoft’s official automated recovery process. If that process fails, there is no other supported way to get the account back.
Follow these steps:
- Use the hacked/compromised account troubleshooter
- Go to the official guide for hacked or compromised Microsoft accounts and start the Sign-in Helper: Start.
- Enter the email address or phone number for the hacked account.
- The tool will either show self-help options or offer a way to talk to an agent, depending on what’s possible for that account.
- Run through the hacked-account recovery steps
- First, clear all devices of malware before changing any passwords. If using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10/11, ensure Windows Defender (or another antivirus) is up to date and run a full scan.
- After scanning, try to sign in and change the password using the guidance in the hacked-account article.
- If sign-in is not possible, use the password reset flow and then the account recovery form as directed in the article.
- If recovery form fails repeatedly
- Community and support agents cannot bypass the automated recovery system or manually verify identity for consumer Microsoft accounts.
- If the hacker has replaced the security info (like 2FA methods and recovery email/phone) and the recovery form does not approve the request, the account is considered unrecoverable.
In that case, the only option is to create a new Microsoft account and secure it with strong, unique passwords and updated security info.
