Changing from a modern gamertag back to the original classic gamertag is not supported once the change has been made.
Modern gamertags were introduced specifically because the classic gamertag namespace was saturated and had stricter limits (ASCII only, up to 15 characters, unique name). When a modern gamertag is chosen, a classic gamertag is auto-generated, but the system does not provide a way to reclaim an old classic gamertag that no longer meets the classic rules (for example, if it exceeds the character limit or is no longer available in the namespace).
Because classic gamertags are limited to 15 ASCII characters and must be unique, a 13‑character classic tag that was released or changed cannot be guaranteed to be available again. The platform documentation only describes moving from classic to modern (and auto‑generating a classic form), not restoring a previous classic tag.
If the current modern gamertag is not acceptable, the only supported option is to change the gamertag again through the normal “change gamertag” flow, subject to the standard limits and availability.
