    Hello @JESSIKAH JACKSON,

I'm sorry to hear about this issue.

Based on your description, I understand that a portion of your essay has gone missing, and you’re unable to recover it using Undo or Version History. I also understand this is urgent as you need to submit your work soon. Please let me know if I misunderstood any part of your issue or if there are additional details you’d like to share.

To help us provide the most accurate and effective solution for recovering the missing section, could you please share a bit more information about your setup?

    • How are you accessing the document (Word for Mac app, Word online in a browser, or another app)?
    • Is the file stored in OneDrive or locally on your Mac?
    • Have you noticed whether the missing content disappeared after a specific action (for example, closing the app, syncing, or switching devices)?
    • Does the app only have your school account signed in, and work is saved under this account?
    • Did you recall enable the AutoSave feature?

This additional context will help us better understand your environment and the steps already taken so we can tailor the guidance to resolve the issue effectively.

In the meantime, here are some basic checks you can try:

    • Open the document in Word for the web and check Version History there (sometimes it shows versions not visible in the desktop app).
    • If the document is synced with OneDrive, sign in to onedrive.live.com, locate the file, and check Version History directly from OneDrive.
    • If possible, check whether you have any older copies attached to emails, shared drafts, or backups (such as Time Machine, if enabled).
    • As this is an urgent request, please try reaching out to your school IT admin for assistance, and ask if any other students/teachers can help you directly.

I apologize if I could not jump straight to a solution. I want to avoid suggesting anything that might be inaccurate or unhelpful. Once we have the details above, we’ll be able to assist you more effectively and guide you toward the right resolution.

Looking forward to your response so we can get this sorted out together.

Try these options in order, stopping as soon as the missing text is found.

    1. Check Word’s AutoRecover / unsaved versions (desktop Word)
      1. Open Word on the Mac.
      2. Open the essay file.
      3. Go to File > Info.
      4. Under Manage Document, look for a version labeled something like (when I closed without saving) and open it.
      5. If it has the missing chunk, choose Restore to overwrite the current file, or Compare to copy just the missing section back into the current version.
If the file was never saved at the time the chunk existed:
      1. Go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents.
      2. Open any candidates and, if the missing text is there, use Save As to save it, then copy the text back into the main document.
    2. Use Version History if the file is in OneDrive/SharePoint
      1. Make sure the essay is stored in OneDrive or a SharePoint Online library (for example, saved in a OneDrive-synced folder or created in Word for the web).
      2. Open the file (Word desktop or Word for the web).
      3. Go to File > Info.
      4. Select Version History.
      5. In the Version History pane, open earlier versions one by one until a version with the missing section is found.
      6. Click Restore to roll back to that version, or copy just the missing text from that version into the current one.
Alternatively, in OneDrive on the web or in Finder with the OneDrive sync app:
      1. In Finder, right‑click the file in the OneDrive folder.
      2. Select Version history.
      3. Use the menu next to an older version and choose Restore (or open and copy the missing text).
    3. Check OneDrive recycle bin / SharePoint recovery (if the whole file or an older copy was deleted) If an older copy of the document was deleted rather than edited:
      1. Go to OneDrive on the web and open the Recycle bin.
      2. Restore any deleted versions of the essay and look for the missing section there.
    4. If none of the above show the missing text If the content is not in AutoRecover, unsaved documents, Version History, or any restored copies, there is no supported Microsoft method in the provided material to reconstruct that specific missing chunk. In that case, the only option is to rewrite it, using any partial notes or earlier exports/prints as reference.

    For future work, ensure:

    • The document is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint so Version History is available.
    • AutoSave/AutoRecover is turned on while working.
